    Microspikes

Another vote for the Kahtoola's. Even more in love with them after last weekend when I took 'em around Red Butte Peak and found myself scrambling on quite a bit of exposed rock. When I got down I was dreading taking them off and finding a few bent spikes--but lo' and behold, they were still in...

Cold: 2011 Banff Grand Prize winner. The first successful winter climb of an 8,000 meter Pakistani peak. Unbelievable accomplishment. Warning: foul language.

My First Backpacking Trip - Escalante '04

Great story Nick, thanks for sharing. Some of your best writing yet. I love hearing stories like this about how people got hooked (hmmmm, perhaps we need a thread on this). I can't even imagine the horror you must've felt as Nikita vanished into the night....and then the unparalleled euphoria...

    Gelmersee or Lake Gelmer [Switzerland]

Q-see, thanks for sharing! Your photographic stories of the Swiss Alp landscape are quite awe-inspiring. Please keep em coming!

    The Maze

Yeah, this is definitely the crux of the route. After this point heading up, there a few other sketchy, somewhat exposed places, but nothing like this, and nothing that can't be easily defeated with a partner assist and pack lowering/raising. Definitely wouldn't want to do this route solo.

    The Maze

Yes. You'd either want to be completely pack-free, or carry a 20-30' rope for lowering/raising packs if thru-hiking. The rope could also be used for a belay if anyone felt the need.

    5.10 Canyoneer's

Yep, what Nick said. My experience with them overall has been great, but only after some serious customization, since I bought them too large (I wear an 11.5 in normal shoes and tried the 12.5 in the Canyoneers). Basically, length-wise they were okay with a thin smartwool and neo-sock combo...

    The Maze

Thank you for the kind words, everyone. Duke, absolutely. I've been pretty loyal to an editing software named Corel VideoStudio Pro. It's a decent introductory editing program, affordable, very intuitive, and fairly clean interface. But lately, it's been going haywire on me, and I'm...

    The Maze

I just pictured, in the scene when you open the cooler, that on top of the beer there's a stack of these things. And then I just about lost it.

    The Maze

Over Memorial Day weekend, 2012, Nick, neiloro, Miss Buffalo, and whitwilli and I ventured into the heart of The Maze district in Canyonlands National Park for a four day backpacking adventure. Nick delivered a highly detailed and excellently written trip report of our expedition here, in case...

Short hike around Deam Wilderness Indiana

The thunderstorms started around 2 in the afternoon, with new ones rolling in every 3-4 hours or so. They didn't stop until about 5 in the morning. Crazy. I'm from Paw Paw, so not so far from South Haven. My refuge was the sand dunes themselves, in particular those in Grand Mere State Park...

Short hike around Deam Wilderness Indiana

Great TR, thanks for sharing! This report actually brings back great memories. I spent the first 22 years of my life in southern Michigan, and so made it down to the Dean Wilderness a couple of times (only in the summer, however). At home I was completely surrounded by deforested flatlands, so...

    Ultralight Bear Canisters

From what I understand, you should treat your booze just like the rest of your food, and hang it at the very least. This article makes a few good points: http://www.backpacker.com/ask_a_bear/blogs/1579

    Ultralight Bear Canisters

A story from this summer. Now while these black bears prefer the slow, thirst quenching effervescence of a cold beer, rumor has it their grizzly cousins prefer the hard stuff... http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/family-four-bears-breaks-cabin-drink-100-beers-181034427.html

    Maps for Spring trip

This is where the standard GPS prevails. I typically carry my phone in my pocket in airplane mode, and only flip on the GPS when I want to check my location, drop a way point, check the elevation, etc. Doing this, I can get a few days out of the battery, if I'm lucky. But if I were to turn the...

    Ultralight Bear Canisters

I'd recommend the 4-day capacity Solo model. You're right, if you're going somewhere where bear cans are either required or where it's simply safe and logical to have one, your traveling mates would likely have one too. And if you're ever considering stretching a trip out to 5 or 6 days with...
