    The new backcountrypost logo

Nice, so glad to get rid of the upper case R - stabbed me in the eye every time I saw it. (The other upper case letters were not as bad but greatly prefer this style.)

Little Death Hollow & Wolverine Loop

Great trip, sorry to hear about Nikita, it was hot for those of used to winter temperatures. We walked in the first mile from the Wolverine Loop on Sunday afternoon, the volume and variety of petrified wood is incredible. Petrified Wood and Cactus by Bob Palin, on Flickr Biff Walks The...

    The new backcountrypost logo

I like #7 and #9, the font is better in #7. The lower case K R and P look much better than upper case.

    Album Spring in the desert

I've driven a couple of tours of Cathedral Valley in the last week (I drive for Backcountry Outfitters in Torrey), there are a few flowers showing up now, lots of vetch of course, but some other plants too. Nice Paintbrush (4/4/12 - Fremont River Ford) A primrose on the Glass Mountain in...

    Best Dog-Friendly Hikes in Utah

Hadn't realized that Escalante NM allowed dogs to be off leash, that should keep me busy for a while! We were at the petrified forest on the Wolverine Loop this weekend, poor Biff found it a bit hot. Saturday morning when we walked it was 20F, Sunday afternoon 75F, he never knows which coat to...

    Bag Night Challenge 2012

Is there any prize bigger than that! :) I've only spent 2 nights under the stars in my life, lots and lots in a tent, used to camp almost every weekend April-November growing up in England. Spent 40 straight nights in a tent crossing the country (SF to Newfoundland) in 1997 but it was camping...

    The Maze via Jet Boat

If the Maze Overlook is the same road as Brimhall Point, which I think it is, the road is pretty easy. I did it on my (street legal) dirt bike a few years ago and found a ranger out here in his Chevy, of course he had left his spare wheel on the trail a few miles back... Trip Report

Capitol Reef next week Wednesday to Saturday

Oh good. If you happen to be around there at sunset the views from the ridge/shelf below the mesa top are amazing, the path starts near the camp site and goes straight up, you'll see it.

Capitol Reef next week Wednesday to Saturday

Probably too late to be useful but I went down that way this afternoon to walk the dog, it is MP 73, there was nobody at the camp site.

    Protection Filters

I actually had no idea this could be done, do you have some place in particular that you use for this? I don't use a filter for protection but usually have the CP filter on.

Capitol Reef next week Wednesday to Saturday

If you have a vehicle with a little clearance it's nice up on The Velvet Ridge just north of Torrey, up the Great Western Trail then turn left after crossing Sand Creek. I enjoyed being up there on the last full moon. http://blog.bobpalin.com/2012/march/20120308.php

    Album Arches & Natural Bridges

I was just reading the HDR thread and remembered this set of pictures - not intended to look realistic, I just like the way they glow, the sandstone does glow in certain lights though not quite as bright as this. Hickman Bridge HDR 6 by Bob Palin, on Flickr

    Focus Group - Round 2

If the logo was typed as a URL it would be bacKcountRypost.com The uppercase B looks chunky, and I'm chunky enough. The camel case version is slightly better but I still prefer the lower case. What does it look like with all lower case letters?

    Noobs: Introduce Yourself!

Hi everybody, I'm Bob "Killer" Palin (no relation), I have lived near Torrey for 8 years now having previously been in California and originating in England. I'm not a backpacker but I like to get out and walk with the dog in the area, 40 years of soccer and 20 years of skiing had an affect on...

    Best Dog-Friendly Hikes in Utah

Nice lists - how about a sub list? Best Day Hikes in Utah With Dogs I like to let Biff run free on our hikes, he's well behaved and rarely wanders more than 100 feet from me, but of course even that isn't allowed in the National Parks.

    Noobs: Introduce Yourself!

Hello everybody, I'm Bob and I live just outside Capitol Reef NP on the edge of Torrey with partner Janet and dog Biff. I've been here for 7 years now and love hiking in the hills around, not so much in the park these days as Biff isn't allowed to run free there. Last summer I worked part time...
