    Lost Coast Trail April 2015

Good deal. I think her main complaints were about the lower half too. The pics you posted are beautiful.

    Lost Coast Trail April 2015

Not sure if anyone here follows walkingwithwired.com, but she recently finished the LCT also. She didn't give it such rave reviews though. But I can't tell from your report (since there aren't pics)...did you do just the northern (beach) piece or did you do the full 48 miles including the...

    Hiking Books (entertaining not informational)

Emerald Mile is on my nightstand waiting to be read. I picked it up after I heard the author on the "Dirtbag Diaries" podcast (which is pretty good stuff if you're into the whole podcast thing).

    What would Abbey think???

This whole topic reminds me of the Yogi Berra quote: "nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded." I think a lot about the conundrum of backcountry "crowding". Personally, I hate waiting in lines, getting permits, dealing with people....but I understand that *someone* (many, many someones)...

    What would Abbey think???

I suspect Abbey would think they should blow up the roads and make people walk (crawl?) in if they want to see the park. I think it depends on your POV of the parks though...if you're a Moab businessman I imagine your preference would be different than a backpacker's would be. Forcing people...

Slate Canyon Loop: A local Backpacking Adventure!

Don't worry...us Easterners just get jealous every time we see a trip report like this :D

    Album Phone pics...

Here's a phone pic I didn't post in my trip report. I was standing on the trunk of my (rental) car (shh, don't tell them) directly outside the pedestrian entrance to Zion.

    Trans-Zion Trip Report

The trip was last week. Night time temps were in the mid 40s in the main canyon, so I assume they were in the high 30s up where I was camping the 2nd night (almost 3000 feet above main canyon floor). Temps are already 15-20 degrees higher this week it looks like.

    Trans-Zion Trip Report

My first trip to Zion…in fact my first hiking trip in Utah at all. I’ve done all of my backpacking in the mid-Atlantic area…land of the long green tunnel. I’d done some day hiking in the Tetons and around Lake Tahoe, but never any overnight trips in the West. Needless to say, I was very...

    Buying your way lighter.

What kind of pack and tent do you have. I'm surprised (impressed) that they are so light given the sizes you quote. That said, I do think it's possible to go lighter. Clearly reducing your clothes is a big change. I don't even carry one full set of replacement clothes when I'm out. And there...

July Zion Traverse and Narrows Backpacking Itinerary

Starting next Monday I'm doing a modified version of your itinerary. I'm doing the Traverse but planning to skip the part from the main canyon to the E. Rim, instead catching a shuttle to Chamberlain Ranch. I'll be back after the trip and will post any thoughts/suggestions I come up with. For...

    Zion

The official answer is that there is no restriction on homemade alcohol stoves in the backcountry.

    Zion

Awesome, thanks for the info. I have La Verkin site 7 and Campsite 2 on the West Rim reserved for nights 1 and 3, so I think I'm in good shape. The only question is that I need to get from Campsite 2 on the W. Rim down to Zion Adventures by 9:30am on Day 4 in order to catch my shuttle to the...

Good to know...I left them a message last Friday so I'll just wait for a callback.

    Zion

Can someone tell me if alcohol stoves are allowed in the Zion backcountry? My internet research has given me no specific help, and I haven't been able to reach a ranger station to talk to a live person. Thanks.

The Virgin River Narrows in Zion National Park From The Top Down

Nick - How long did it take you to get to campsite 12, if you recall? I am going in May and I could only get campsite 12 when I booked online (despite it being on a weekday and me booking within 10 minutes of the reservation system opening).

5-7 Days on the Muir Trail

I don't have any specific recommendations, but I'll save someone else the trouble of asking....how far do you want/expect to hike per day? Also...M-I-Z...
