    Loving our Parks to Death

What would happen if we designated all of the national parks as wilderness areas? I think it would surely solve the over crowding concerns. Would that ever fly at a macro level? @Nick i have no concerns about park managers on a micro level. My issues are more big picture. Does the park service...

    Loving our Parks to Death

@Nick , I'm not saying they don't see the traffic as a problem, but I am skeptical (at best) that they see overcrowding/over-visitation as a problem. It's the whole Industrial Tourism issue, isn't it? Getting rid of the roads into the Parks won't ever happen though, because the gov't wants...

    Loving our Parks to Death

I just don't think there's any incentive for the gov't to fix the problem...and I dare say they probably don't even feel like there IS a problem.

    Yellowstone/Teton Touristy Trip

The only chuck wagon dinner I saw was at dornans but didn't eat there. Jackson seems to have a ton of good burger places. The best we had was (I think) called The Bird. That would also be a good place to put back a few beers.

    Yellowstone/Teton Touristy Trip

Wife & I did a trip to Jackson two years ago. Couple thoughts... 1) We did a sunrise float down the Snake River which was excellent. No whitewater, just lazy floating, awesome sunrise views and a moose sighting. Finished with breakfast at Dornan's. 2) Canoe/kayak rental on Jenny Lake was a...

I've been to Cranberry too...personally I like Dolly Sods quite a bit more.

    Dolly Sods Wilderness

Dolly Sods Wilderness is a 17,000 acre wilderness area in West Virginia, about 3 hours from the DC Metro area. It's described as a high altitude plateau and includes a variety of different ecological zones (high meadows, bogs and forests are all present). While I've never been there, I imagine...

When to take a rain check?

I struggle with the same thing. I bailed on a trip on 4th of July weekend because of the forecast and it ended up barely raining. Seems like I almost always regret bailing when I do. That said, the weather in the East this spring/summer has been horrific so bailing isn't a terrible option...

Desert noobs visit Zion and the North Rim

That's exactly where I'm coming from as well. On the other hand, when you climb up to that viewpoint you really do feel like you've accomplished something...unlike those lazy western hikers who can get a great view just by driving up to the trailhead.

Desert noobs visit Zion and the North Rim

I like the mountains in Virginia just fine, and I will continue to enjoy hiking here. I'll also continue to enjoy eating cheeseburgers while realizing they aren't as good as a really excellent steak (choose your own analogy, you get the picture). Just because something's not the best doesn't...

Desert noobs visit Zion and the North Rim

I've always wondered if people from the west enjoy hiking in the east, or if they find it terribly boring to look at trees all the time. I can say, as someone that backpacks a lot in Virginia, that the best hike I've ever taken in Virginia was less interesting than the most boring part of my...

    The Emerald Mile

2016 is a milestone anniversary year for my wife and I. Our big vacation will have to be more wife-friendly than a rafting trip. I'm just hoping I can make it something like "Alaskan cruise" and not "beach/spa".

    The Emerald Mile

I recently read the book as well and had a similar reaction. Actually, it goes back about a month earlier. As I was walking through the Narrows in Zion I couldn't help but start thinking about doing a Colorado river trip. Reading this book did nothing but crystallize the idea in my head and...

    outdoors quotes

"But every eye was turned to the mountains. Forgotten now were the [natives] and missions while the word of God was being read in these majestic hieroglyphics blazoned along the sky. The earnest, childish wonderment with which this glorious page of Nature's Bible was contemplated was...

    The other Subway in Zion

I must have hit it on a good day when I went in May. Once I passed Orderville Canyon I was almost alone. On topic...I liked to feel of Springdale when I was there. If I were a local restaurant owner, I would absolutely fear the impact of Subway, and the inevitable McD's, Taco Bell, etc...

    The other Subway in Zion

Mixed emotions...I'm all for capitalism, but I also like the idea that a town can avoid falling victim to terrible places like Subway. Maybe if it was a Five Guys or In and Out I'd feel differently, but Subway is...just terrible.

    Water On The Trail

Have others had trouble using smartwater bottles with the mini or squeeze? I found that the bottles get pretty deformed after one or two "squeezes" through the filter. I much prefer using the pouch for the "dirty" water and squeezing it into the bottles.

    Water On The Trail

I typically use an empty gatorade bottle or smartwater bottle (or two), in addition to a 1L platypus bag or the bag that came with my Sawyer Squeeze. I fill the "dirty water" bag and filter it into an empty bottle as needed. I've also done plenty of trips with just aqua mira drops, in which...
