    Kid friendly day hikes

Devil's Garden in Arches is in the ~7ish range. I took my oldest daughter on that one when she was 9 and she loved it. Several arches and pretty flat. After Landscape Arch you lose the crowds. Make sure you stop at Private Arch if you do that one. It's just barely off the trail. I don't think...

    Kid friendly day hikes

At Capitol Reef, I like Hickman Bridge with my kids. It's popular but the parking lot isn't very big so it's more likely that you don't find a parking spot vs. the trail being completely overrun. If you're looking to escape the people completely, there are several hikes off of Norton-Bullfrog...

Wondering When The National Parks Will Open

I (finally) pulled a Glacier permit for the northern loop from Many Glacier for 2020 in the heart of August. Glacier just emailed everyone that ALL 2020 backcountry permits were being canceled. If the park reopens, they'll move everything to first come, first serve. I wouldn't be surprised if...

    Uintas Backpacking Loop

I've seen Crater Lake from the top of Red Knob and it looks both remote and breathtaking. Getting up there for a night would be pretty awesome. That trailhead really does lend itself well to a loop hike with a number of options.

Two More Local Fridays -or- Timp Two Ways

Great pictures! Thank you for the post. The snow doesn't look as bad as I've seen it on Timp this year but I could be wrong...

    Uintas Backpacking Loop

Nothing like a COVID-19 pandemic to give you the time to write up some long overdue trip reports. I've gotten so many great ideas, timely conditions reports, and ogled over enough pictures, that it's time to give back. While putting this together, I'm reminded about how far cell phone cameras...

East Coast to Unitas Trip Recommendations

So many options... As Will said, I would avoid anything along Mirror Lake Highway if avoiding crowds is high on your lists. Mosquitoes are non-existent at that time of year. Even in a late snow year, they're pretty much gone by early August. If we're combining fishing with avoiding crowds, I...

ISO Tiger Trout in the Uintas

It's a trek but I've caught a few up at Red Castle. Tiger and Cutthroat were what I kept coming up with. The biggest fish I've caught in the Uintas have come out of Red Castle. It's really deep so the winter freeze doesn't kill nearly as much.

Circling Seven Gables Peak, John Muir Wilderness.

Great post. I'm not familiar with that area (heard of it, but never been). Is it common to need an ice axe and crampons in mid-August?

    Uintas - Erickson Basin Aug. 3-5 2017

Looks like a fun time. I love seeing parents getting their kids out into the Uintas.

    Backcountry Vehicles

I have a two Wrangler as my weekend car and I'm glad it's not my daily driver. You'll get a variety of opinions on this one, but the biggest thing for a Wrangler is what modifications you make to it and whether it's a 2 or 4 door. My two door is small and wouldn't work if I had to transport kids...

Uinta Highline Trail Part II Planning

I'm not sure what the temps in the Uintas were like, but in there were more 100 degree days in the SLC valley than I ever remember. There's usually a few of those each year and there was a streak of eight days in a row with 100+. I did some hiking in late June in the Uintas and snow was...

West Fork Blacks Fork River Crossing 2017

I made the crossing on Thursday (7/27) while day hiking up to Dead Horse Lake. I drive a Jeep Rubicon with a lift and probably wouldn't care what time of year it is. With that said, there were about ten stock SUVs and Pickup Trucks at the trailhead past the river crossing. Only one SUV was on...

Uinta Highline Trail Part II Planning

I took this picture of Dead Horse Pass yesterday a few feet above the lake as I lost the tree line. I hiked about halfway up the pass; it was a 21-mile day hike so the entire thing wasn't in the deck of cards. I crossed one small snowfield that was low in difficulty and danger. I did the...

Three of the Four American Fork Twin Peaks

Thanks for posting all of the pictures. I was up there on Sunday myself. White Pine trailhead to White Pine Lake, boulder hop to Red Baldy, and followed the ridge to Red Top, the American Fork Twin Peaks, and then Snowbird. The descent from Red Baldy down to the saddle before going up Red Top is...

    High Uintas - Middle Basin

Awesome pictures. I'll have to add Middle Basin to my Uintas list. There's just so much to see there and not enough time to get it done!

Uinta Highline Trail Part II Planning

I'm day hiking West Fork Blacks Fork tomorrow up to Deadhorse Lake, and perhaps the pass if the snow looks okay and I enough gas in the tank. I'll let you know how the pass looks from the north side (which is where would be terrible).
