BTW... Just kind of interesting to see the ears-down super submissive behavior of the beta around the old Alpha Bitch. You can see the old gal giving the young one some stink eye in a couple of these pictuers. That yearling daughter so much as holds her head high around momma and she gets her...

    Album Wildlife

A family group of coyotes. Wet female, male and one of last years female pups. Have not tried to locate the den - probably wouldn't be hard, since I know where that notch eared female likes to make hers, but I really don't need to bother them right now. - DAA

    Bag Night Challenge 2014

Backpacked Salt Creek with Randy and Jared. Loved every second of it! Well, except maybe the last mile or so of death march in the sand. But even that, I didn't hate. Just maybe didn't love it as much as the 59 miles we hiked before that :D. 23 nights total. Owyhee Desert, Jan. - 2...

    Bag Night Challenge 2014

One rainy and one windy night out on Antelope Island. I don't stay in campgrounds very often, but I've never seen so many people pack up and bail as I did Friday night in the rain. Wasn't an open spot when we got there of Friday, full up. Only one other site occupied by Saturday (White Rock...

    Tips for solo backpacking

I've had black bears in my camp while car camping a couple of times. Trashed my camp in the middle of the day once. Really no big deal though. Last one was a few years ago in the La Sals. Middle of the night. I had a gun, but didn't ever feel the need to use it. As long as the bear doesn't...

    Tips for solo backpacking

Obviously, yes. Hell, I can detect a scared soul in about a tenth of a second. And my life doesn't depend on it in the least (not anymore, not for a long, long time now). A predator, that needs to kill to live, probably has a much better sense of the "easy prey" than any human. So, my...

Anyone ever seen black widow spiders in Utah?

That's the rationale my wife uses to explain how she repeatedly allows herself to be robbed through the mail... It's a ding bat's approach to life. But it works for millions. So what do I know? - DAA

Anyone ever seen black widow spiders in Utah?

I found a scorpion inside my sleeping bag when I was rolling it up one morning a few years ago. Didn't bite me, as far as I could tell? Definitely was right there inside my bag with me though. - DA

Anyone ever seen black widow spiders in Utah?

I've seen a bunch too. This one was out on The Swell. It's almost straight up from the dogs head, where all the cracks kind of come together on the ceiling of the rock shelter. Was checking out the pictographs visible on the ceiling. I've definitely been bug bit. Plenty of times. No...

    Backcountry beverages

That stuff "ain't for me" as they say. But I can certainly see some practical applications for it. Seeing this thread surfaces reminds me though, I need to decide what to put in the Platy for Salt Creek coming up pretty soon. Have just been rocking Rendevous Rye for awhile now, it's tasty...

May Kolob backpacking trip w/pixie & Steve

No. The evidence and data don't support that at all. I'll not just respectfully disagree, but encourage you to do a little research. Simply look at the attack data itself. It isn't correlated with development or habitat reduction. It's correlated with the hunting ban. The lion lovers...

No. It's real simple. Lions get hunted by humans in Utah. Any traits that would encourage a lack of caution and fear of humans, have remained repressed, by hunting. Lions in Utah - speaking in general terms - aren't the least bit curious about humans. They're scared shitless of humans...

    Fishing Gear.

I'm not a fan of the action on that particular Eagle Claw. I much prefer a fast action rod for tossing lures and catching small trout. That one has a more noodle like action, that I can't stand. A lot of people wouldn't ever notice the difference though, so it might not matter you either...

May Kolob backpacking trip w/pixie & Steve

<shrug> I'm always thrilled to see one and would go out of my way for the opportunity. They are plentiful throughout Utah. Common as dirt, really. But so secretive and mostly nocturnal that actually seeing one isn't very common. Most that I have seen, I have called in by making prey in...

One thing though - I carry my COLD beer supply with me when I drive. And I can pull over and piss at will :p. - DAA

    The Maze

I've done a lot of hiking. And I like walking. But the walk up from Spanish Bottom is not one I personally enjoy. Especially not when it's hot. Thankfully it's a short walk! But I'd rather drive to the Doll house and start walking, than take the jet boat, anyway. The Spanish Bottom thing...

    The Maze

I'm not criticizing, to each his own and that's as it should be. But I really enjoy driving in to The Maze. The bumpy section around Teapot is kind of a drag, but that doesn't last very long and the rest of it is a pretty nice drive. - DAA
