    Do I need a tent

One of the rainiest nights I ever spent camping was at Bryce in August a few years back. Definitely take a tent and if it turns out you don't need it, that's a bonus. Better safe than sorry!

High Sierra Trail to Mt Whitney

Unfortunately, El Nino kinda petered out this spring :( Snowpack is currently 58% of average in the Southern Sierra - whilst its an improvement on the last few years it didn't turn out to be the monster winter that everyone expected. That being said, June in the Sierra is a challenge almost any...

Grand Canyon River Trip.... March 8th-24th 2016

Awesome pics, beyond jealous. If someone told me I could only ever do one more outdoor adventure in my life, this would probably be it. I wanna raft the GC so so bad. I came very close to booking a "Baloney Boat" trip for this summer but didn't do it. I figured that with it probably being a...

High Sierra Trail to Mt Whitney

Yep, if you're starting within Yosemite or SEKI, you need to fax or mail in. Their systems are quite dated now, but I can't imagine that Sequoia or Kings systems are as frustrating as Yosemite's. There are rumors every year that they'll shortly be moving to an online systems but these rarely...

Canaan Mountain & Little Colorado rim exploration

Fellow UK user here! You got some great pics from a couple of beautiful places. I had planned to explore Water Canyon & Canaan Mountain last October but some pretty powerful storms passed through the area when I was there. This was just a couple weeks after the flash flooding that killed more...

    Primitive camping near Tusayan, AZ??

Lots of options in and around Tusayan. I've camped along Forest Road 302 before, it heads East out of Tusayan at the south end of town, some nice spots back there but in hindsight it may have been worth driving a few more miles out of town for more secluded and private sites. There's a forest...

    Cinemascapes

I watched this tonight, has anyone seen it? Fantastic, beautifully shot documentary exploring the issues around the BLM's management of wild horses, as well as public land access rights in the West. A bunch of guys adopt a dozen mustangs and ride from Mexico to Canada through Arizona, Utah...

    Bivy or One Man Tent

At 39oz, that OR bivy is about exactly the same weight (if not heavier) as the BA Copper Spur yet without the space. The BA Fly Creek doesn't have as much space as the Copper Spur but is about 25% lighter still. How about some of the tents from the cottage manufacturers? ZPacks, Six Moon...

    DreamRide Video

Good detective work! I couldn't find any info on whether it was actually illegal or not to ride within canyons, I guess it would vary from area to area but it still doesn't seem cool. And even more strangely, I believe the video is actually produced by Diamondback - a huge, international...

    DreamRide Video

Moderator note: This thread was split off from the Cinemascapes thread. This is a very slickly produced film but there are a few segments here that don't sit totally comfortably with me, particularly in the opening half of the film. Am I the only one? Is that the Bentonite Hills in CRNP? Can...

    Album Non-Backcountry Photos

I was in Athens, Greece for a few days just recently. Despite their economic problems, it's a city I always love visiting. And who could refuse some amazing, authentic Greek food!

How many have relocated to be closer to outdoor activities?

I would give my right arm to be able to relocate to either anywhere on the Colorado Plateau or the Eastern Sierra, not so easy for those of us from outside the US though :( Anyone wanna give me a job and sponsor me?! lol

    Backpacking Stoves

I picked up the BRS-3000T stove today, a Chinese pocket-rocket style canister stove which is apparently the lightest available, weighing 25g (0.88oz). Verified it with my own digital scales and it is exactly 25g on the nose as claimed. You guys can pick it up for about $13. A totally non...

    Havasupai permit

You applied at the South Rim for a Havasupai permit? Or for a different hike within Grand Canyon NP? The National Park is nothing to do with Havasupai and doesn't administer permits for hikes to the village and the falls.
