John Muir Trail: Devil's Postpile to Horseshoe Meadow

July 16th - 28th 2016. Devil's Postpile National Monument to Horseshoe Meadow. Total distance hiked: 202 miles. I love the Colorado Plateau as much as everyone else here, but every now and then I gotta get my fix of the Sierra Nevada. You may or may not remember that last year I completed the...

    Hiking Books (entertaining not informational)

I picked up a cheap second hand copy of "Sunk Without a Sound" today as reading material for a few upcoming flights. Anyone read it? I know of the general story of the disappearance of Glen and Bessie Hyde but am not familiar with the details. Looking forward to reading it!

Advice on hiking the Little Colorado River in July

I've been there in June and it was like the surface of the sun. I can't imagine it being much fun in July.

    Primitive spots north/west of Bryce

There will be folks here who know that area much better than me (I'm in the UK ;)), however I have hiked quite a bit in and around Dixie NF land there, but not in either of the canyons you've mentioned. I've always hauled water in for a full day's hiking... ATV use seems to be increasingly...

    Primitive spots north/west of Bryce

That pin is dropped right in the middle of Red Canyon's ATV trail network. You may be able to camp up there but I don't know how peaceful it would be. Similar to a Friday night at Temple Mountain would be my guess...

    Martin's Boat

I posted this in the Cinemascapes thread too but tbh it probably deserves its own thread, so i'll let Nick have this one lol ;) Great little film. I really really want to do a GC dory trip. Do I bankrupt myself for 6 months and just do it?!

When You Find My Body ....

I was thinking about posting this here. It's a really sad story, but am I the only one thinking that something doesn't add up here? Everything i've read suggests that this lady was "an experienced hiker", yet i'm struggling to wrap my head around how an experienced hiker gets lost a few miles...

Yeah, this is really good. And I say that as someone who, whilst having nothing against them, isn't much of a "dog person".

El Morro and El Malpais Nat'l Monuments, New Mexico

Nice pics! I've seen a lot of beautiful photos of NM and always wanted to explore it but really don't know where to start. And I keep getting distracted with "unfinished business" in UT/AZ lol

    Inspiration

Oh, I like this thread. There's lots of great inspirational quotes like this that I really enjoy. Just about anything from John Muir of course, but I think my favorite is; “I am losing precious days. I am degenerating into a machine for making money. I am learning nothing in this trivial world...

    Cinemascapes

I don't know if there's the appetite or interest for this, but I stumbled across this today and if you find yourself with 30 mins free time, I highly recommend watching it. I think it's one of the best and most powerful short documentaries I've seen. Two guys take what looks likes an incredible...
