Did you run into Mike again? The last time I was there he told me to let him know when I'd be back so he could watch me scramble up to some rock art. I kind of got the impression that he was offering me a ride even though I heard he isn't allowed to any more.

Yes, we ran into him on our way back out. He did mention that he’s not allowed to give rides anymore while we were talking, but I bet he still does on occasion. He made it sound like he might be retiring within the next year.

Seeing the Upper Tellico Off-Road Vehicle Area in the lower right corner of the map reminded me of the good times I had driving those trails a long time ago before they were closed.

After seeing @IntrepidXJ comment about the Upper Telico ORV area I did some internet research since this area isn't on my newer Nat Geo map. It looks like some of these roads would be great for hiking and maybe bikes. But it also sounds like the Forest Service was planning on a major rehab project.

@Tipi Walter have you hiked through this area in the last couple years? If so, what do the old roads look like?

One of the best things ever to happen to Cherokee NF and Tellico River is the closing of the Tellico Off Road Vehicle playground. The rolling sportmen dropped oil pans into the headwaters of Tellico River and no one complained for years until the area got shut down. The main reason it was shut down was to prevent soil erosion from all the traffic in the mud glomming up the river and turning it brown in rainstorms.

Regarding using the area for hiking/backpacking---the closest I ever came was a trip up to Beaverdam Bald to the West and Hogjaw/Mitchell Lick to the East---along the Snowbird Creek Trail #64. Thanks for the idea as it's a big area probably with a dozen great camping spots.
