Hey Backcountry posters,

I was just recently in Cortez, CO and I tried making a trip up into the Ute mountains near there and when I reached the road my GPS told me to take it was gated and locked. Does anybody know a way to get up there or if you need Navajo permission to go up there because I know Sleeping ute is sacred to the Navajo. I know you need permission to go up on Navajo mountain on the UT/ AZ border and I'm wondering if sleeping ute is the same. Does anyone know?

You need an approved Ute guide from the Ute Mountain Reservation...they don't allow anyone to hike up there without a guide. Look up the Ute Mountain Tribal Park.

Ah I see. I guess I won't be going up there any time soon then.
