I heard this on NPR this afternoon.
Beginning this Saturday, Armed Forces Day, the National Parks Service will be offering a free ANNUAL PASS to active members of the U.S. Military. This offer does not apply to veteran former members, only active personnel and their families.
The families part is interesting because they seem to be encouraging family members of active service persons to get their own separate free pass.

My active duty friend wanted to know where you get the pass. I just told him I would assume you go to any national park/historic/recreation/etc and they can get it to you just as if you purchased it. Anyone know if that is correct?

I couldn't find that info; was planning to just call one of Utah's Parks this weekend to ask what they know...

Any federal fee station that sells the pass should be able to issue the military version as of Saturday. My boss verified that our local ranger district is included in that so I'll grab mine at the American Fork Canyon fee booth. Very cool of the DOI to offer this!

Went by AF canyon yesterday and replaced my annual pass as well. Free is pretty damned nice of them.
