Album Hoodoos, Spires and other Rock Formations

We have an album for arches and natural bridges, but nothing for hoodoos, spires and other interesting rock formations, so I thought I would start one!

I'll get it going with this large caprock hoodoo we found in Bears Ears National Monument earlier this month.

Not exactly hoodoos, but they definitely look like hoodoos and are made of lava rock
These rock formations are called lava trees.
Lava Trees are the result when very fast flowing lava engulfs a tree and leaves a hollow, hoodoo-like structure behind when the lava drains away. The bark of the tree is usually pretty cool and moist, so the lava quickly cools leaving these strange looking remnants behind. Some of these lava trees can be several feet high. There are many well-preserved lava trees here in Hawaii Volcanoes NP and even though they look impressive they are very fragile.
I always enjoy walking through this lava tree forest and enjoy the story of the old flows they try to tell me.

Anybody remember "The Sentinel" at Bryce Canyon National Park? In the 1980 it was there is all its glory. Somewhere in time it lost its back hump thus its character.

Bubble Rock

Not necessarily a rock formation, but a cool boulder in Aracadia National Park. Believed to have been pushed by a glacier from 40 miles away, however long that would take, only to stop teetering on the edge of a cliff.

I always love seeing evidence of glaciation on my trips.
