What is the definition of a "bench site"? (referring to a campsite)

I've heard this term multiple times, but I can't figure out exactly what it refers to. Does it refer to the topography of where you're camping, or is bench a noun....lol?

To expand, benches are often preferred for camping because they're generally out of the katabatic zones in the bottom of the drainages, but not so high that they're cold and windy. A happy medium is where you want to be

I'm heading out from Kansas next Wednesday, to backpack into the Soda Fork Meadows and spend a few days there, and am studying my topo map to establish a good place for a proper "bench" campsite at the northern end of the meadow to set up, and maximize morning and evening wildlife viewing.
