First off, I have no idea what it feels like to rappel 300 feet. The longest I've done was about 190 feet, free-hanging, single strand, dynamic rope and with a grigri! (young and STUPID) But I was just looking at ratagonia 's trip report from the technical route through Waterholes canyon and saw a photo that really made me think about what it must be like. On the third page, first photo, there is a great shot that gives such amazing scale. Check it out.

Link to the third page with the image (keep in mind, the person rapping is already a ways down the rope!)

That's one hell of a rappel! I'm suprised by how much garbage they found. Come on people show some respect and pick up after yourselves even if your rope is toast!

That looks exhausting. I'm hoping I'll have time for that someday when my kids are off and don't need me anymore :).

20 years ago, when I was doing cliff climbing in France, I did a 600 feet rappel (on a single non dynamic speologic rope settled for our group, with a 8 descender and a Petzl Shunt) in Gorges du Verdon (the french Mecca for climbing). I felt that it was not really more impressive than a 300 feet rappel, just longer. The problem was to avoid to touch the 8 descender (and to remove it from the rope) as it was very hot and could badly burn our skin.

The full report of your link is really interesting, thanks for sharing.

Uhh, nope, not doing that. Well, maybe, but I'd have to work up to it.......
