I did a little over-nighter on the Wellsvilles June 28th-29th. I think I was crazy to be hiking in 95 degree weather. The climb to Stewarts pass was a bear, once on top the temps dropped 15 degrees and the hiking to camp was a breeze. The wildflowers on the top ridge were unreal this year. I managed to find a few deer along the way and a new comer to the Wellsvilles, I spotted a Rocky Mountain Goat coming up an avalanche chute on the Cache side, then he dropped over on the Box Elder side.
For years my Mom would talk about the cabin up on top that they would stay in during her high school years (in the summer months). My Brother and I looked for it 7 years ago and never found it. I found the remains of the newer cabin. According to my mom, the old cabin was taken out by an avalanche. The Forest Service re-built it the next year, and that following winter it was taken out again and never rebuilt. The cabin is right off of the main slide area, not even 100 yards to the south are some nice pine pockets that would have protected the cabin. You would have thought the Forest Service was smart enough to build it in those pine pockets.

. I've seen goat tracks up on the Mountain two other times, this is my first sighting of a goat. The rattlesnake trail head is a killer going up. I love the coldwater trail head, plan on going up that and back down rattle snake. That's how I hike them. Over the past 80 years, the USFS built two cabins, both below the Cone, both destroyed by avalanches!
