walkie talkies?

My wife and I have been discussing getting walkie talkies or something of that sort for when we go backpacking or even hiking, this way if one wanders of for a potty break or to explore a bit we can contact each other if needed.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what would be best to use, or is it just more weight that is unnecessary? Phones are usually useless where we go.
