The wood burning/USB stove charger reminded me of this cool new stove. I ordered one last summer when the project was live on Kickstarter. According to the latest emails from the inventor, I should see it within a month or so. Seems like an awesome way to boil water without packing fuel, a pot or traditional stove. Boils in 4-8 minutes, weighs 8 oz and is a bit smaller than a nalgene bottle. I'll definitely be posting a review when I finally get my hands on it.

Backcountry Boiler: Hot water from found fuel

Snap.. I had meant to get in on that

It's designed to boil 2 cups at a time, the actual capacity is more than that but there's room to keep it from boiling over.

This looks like it would work well for freezer bag/dehydrated meals. As long as you could find fuel(dry) for it. I wonder if a Trioxane tablet would provide enough heat to boil 2 cups of water in this? I bought a fairly big box of Trioxane tablets about 5 yrs back and have pretty much the whole box left. If you want to try some out in this when you get it let me know and I'll send you some. It might be handy to carry a couple of them when using this stove just in case there was no dry fuel to be found.

I don't know what I like better about Kickstarter, getting cool things like the Backcountry Boiler or seeing how hard it actual has been to get these things manufactured over the last 9 months. Sounds like I'll finally be getting boiler this month. :)

Project Update #26: Free at last

I feel like a member of Seal Team Six.
The 18 hour, cross-border operation began in the pre-dawn hours of southwestern Pennsylvania. By the time it was finished, I had rescued 150 Backcountry Boilers from their Ontarionian captors. The mission was tense, like walking a piano wire, and I was always waiting for the other shoe to drop. But it didn't. Even the fully-prepped airstrike remained in the hanger. I and all the hostages made it home safely.
In other words, after months of wrangling, I finally have enough Backcountry Boilers for all of you lovely backers.
Here's what an end to all those delays and headaches means:
If you've gotten one of those shipping emails, but haven't received you Boiler yet, it will - absolutely - be in the post on Monday. The rescue mission required me to scrub an earlier pickup, but it is now firmly scheduled.
The remainder of the Boilers (Signatures, Six-Packs, some Supremes) will all, come hell or high water, be shipped by February 29th. I can think of no better way to celebrate leap year.
So honestly:
Your waiting has not been in vain! They are coming! :)

Well I finally received my backcountry boiler this week. So this afternoon, I decided to go out in the back yard and film myself using it for the first time. An hour later, I smell like smoke and am not totally sold on the device. The good news: I didn't burn down anything. Might not have been the best idea to do this underneath my big cedar tree on such a windy day. Full review coming soon with video! :)
