Last June I was in Telluride for a work trip and on a previous trip I had ridden their free bike park up at Mountain Village (includes a free gondola ride up to the top of the mountain if you can believe that!) I was talking to one of my co-workers about the trail conditions and he suggested an alternative as well as an opportunity to go along: Ride Alta Lakes. This is a forest service area which spans along an old mining village. The scenery was out of this world, going from tall pine trees to open meadows, then jumping into fields of fern surrounded by Aspen trees. We didn't see another soul up there that evening and it felt like you were on the outskirts of civilization.
This trip took us a total of about 3 hours, which included a 2-car shuttle involved. Trying to do this without a car would probably double the time at least. Highly suggest anyone interested make sure they take someone that knows the area because there are many trails that criss-cross and can lead you back to the logging road (which you don't want to do).
