It's been a while since I've posted any TRs. I'll attempt to fix that here in the near future if I can only get @Nick to have a new competition! But if not, I'll still try to get some new stuff posted.
We moved to Arizona right after Thanksgiving last year. I know, it's been a while since I've blogged. We're settled in down here and doing some exploring. One of the places we made sure to visit was the Garden Canyon Petroglyphs. Garden Canyon is on Ft. Huachuca, an active Army installation, so getting on post takes a drivers license and proof of insurance. If you're not from the US, you might just be out of luck. But, you could drive up and ask anyway- who knows, they might just say yes!
Garden Canyon is the one spot in the US where wild potatoes are native. It's a small piece of trivia, but pretty cool none-the-less. An hour or so west of Garden Canyon is the Wild Chile Botanical Study Area- home of the some wild chile peppers. I haven't made it there yet, but think it would be fun to sometime when it cools off a bit. South of Tucson can get pretty warm.
The pictographs are in a rock overhang a short distance off of the road in Garden Canyon. There are two locations, about 1/4 mile apart from each other. The Garden Canyon location is first, with the Rappelling Cliffs location a little further up the road. The pictographs are fenced off at both locations, but are still pretty cool to see. These were created by Apaches and the birds are young eagles.
There are several other designs and paintings as well.
Here's a close-up of one of the eagles. The white on black is pretty much awesome.
These red guys are at the Rappelling Cliffs site. It's not as abundant as the Garden Canyon site is. It's still worth stopping at and seeing though.
