I picked up a used Canon EOS 1Ds mark II for a steal off of eBay. It showed up yesterday afternoon and I wanted to take it out today to make sure everything was working. I had originally planned earlier in the week to hike up Black Mountain, but as the weekend approached the forecast got uglier and when I got up this morning the chance of rain had increased to 50% starting supposedly this afternoon. I didn't want to get the camera wet, so I changed my hiking plans and did a quick hike up Pencil Point instead so that i could beat the rain.
I'm including some fall colors in this report instead of putting them in the Autumn Colors 2024 post. I was surprised that there still was some tucked away maples that had some color to them along the north slopes.
Some color right off the bat
A view of Jack's Mountain at one of the switchbacks
Fall colors
That-s Pencil Point up top
Rose hips
A very small bird's nest in this maple tree
Beginning the climb up Pencil Point
It gains about 700 feet in 0.5 mile
The 1Ds Mark II is a heavy one
Lots of good looking Juniper trees today
Juniper berries
The summit of Grandeur Peak above Parley's Ridge
Sheila on the steep section
A chukar had just come out of the scrub oak, scaring Sheila and flying towards her head. Can you tell she is frightened? Or maybe
it is just the guy up ahead in the kilt?
The view of the top of Parley's Ridge from the summit of Pencil Point
View to the north of Jack's Mountain
Salt Lake and @Rockskipper get the bikini pose
Are cellphones allowed on Pencil Point?
The zoomed in shots of Mount Wire to the north are for @Janice, to remind her to climb the beacon next time.
The newly acquired 1Ds Mark II - It looks comfy on the summit
A small lunch include jalapeño curd from Gossner's in Cache Valley
And the last of our Elliott apples that we purchased at the Farmers' Market a couple of weeks ago. These apples are delicious!
Summit shot
I liked this shot with Frary Peak in the sunlight, and the State Capitol at the bottom in the cloud shadow
I call this Thistle and Grandeur
And this Ragweed and Scrub
A couple more nice Junipers
A good view of what we were dealing with. Pencil Point in front, with Parley's Ridge beyond, and Jack's Mountain off to the left,
and the switches in the trail.
Only flowers we saw today
More reds in the scrub oak
Some type of pepper weed
One last red
Hawthorn berries
Bladder senna
Heading down the switchbacks to the Sube.
The End.
