We awake in the canyon. There are these slanted ledges, with steps and many of us fit in the grooves, swaddled in smooth limestone. We assume the canyon will release us soon and we will be at the river promptly. We figured wrong. Three rappel anchors must be built. The usual solution is found more often than not, with rock and knot chocks”. Packs get passed on a tricky downclimb. A bypass is taken that in retrospect who have been more aesthetic as a rappel. A fun little inner gorge, spills us down to the river.
Todd and Guy have a different schedule. They must exit up the long hill. Their super fitness makes that happen with alacrity. The four remaining souls blow up their pool toys and cast off. We are met by a river rafting trip who offer beer to the pool toy folks. Some accept.
The wind has picked up and we land and hang our wet gear in the wind and sun. The boys have a convoluted return route, taking several nights. Its all OK by me. We hike a pleasant canyon for many hours, go up a side canyon, find water and camp. We spend the early evening climbing a 5th class chimney and then making our way into and then down the side canyon, the siren song of adventure calling. The canyon is small and intimate. Another day in the Grand
