Recently a facebook friend of mine invited me to go hike Zebra and Tunnel slot with him. What he didnt tell me was that he was leaving St George at 3AM so he could catch some sunrise photography at Devils Garden! Oh well I begrudgingly tagged along with the promise that I could sleep in the car the entire drive (of course I didnt as I didnt trust him not to fall asleep)

We arrived at Devils Garden just before the sun and had some decent light.

The main point of the trip was to scratch Zebra Canyon off my list. The first time I tried Zebra with my wife and brother in law some Europeans scared us off (my wife dresses up to hike and when they saw her looking all cute they suggested we try spooky and peekaboo) I am kind of glad they did. Not because we couldnt have done/found Zebra (at the time there was water in the canyon) but rather because spooky and peekaboo are soooooo much better/more fun hikes. While Zebra is awesome for a photographer (not claiming to be one :)) it is a lot of buck for your bang! IMHO it is not a headliner when there are sooooo many amazing things off of hole in the rock.

On the way out we decided to stop by tunnel slot. The water was freezing and was at the deepest just below my waste. Fortunately the slot section is only about 20 yards or so.

Nice stuff, Magneto. And I agree. For most, the hike to Zebra is pretty uneventful compared to a lot of the other options. Definitely one for the photography crowd though. It looks spectacular in photos.

I love the pictures and I like Zebra slot. At least if there is no water in it :) And you're right, for photographers there are a lot of options. Otherwise I would choose something else to explore
And thanks for the sunrise pics in Devils Garden. I always wondered if it is worth to get there for sunrise and had it in mind for this summer.

Awesome pics Matt! How long ago did you go? Unless it rains next weekend I'm hoping to hit Zebra, and also hoping it will still be dry. Is Tunnel worth the extra hike in your opinion? Not necessarily from a photographic standpoint, but just as far as being a fun slot?

Very cool, Matt! The second devils garden shot is beautiful the way the
Ight is hitting them, great stuff!

I still think Devils is a sunset spot, but we were happy with the results nonetheless!

Last Saturday. There was one spot with just a touch of water. We tried to go over it but we were getting pretty high up the canyon. All of us ended up getting wet (only up to the knees or so). As for Tunnel....jeez...yes and no! If you werent already so close I would say no, but being within a mile or so it would be a shame if you missed it (although that extra mile in lots of sand kinda sucks!). The coolest part about tunnel is after the tunnel there are tons and tons of moqui marbles.

Thanks! I figured we might as well hit Tunnel since we'd be so close, but it seems like a lot of people skip it, so I was curious about what your opinion of it was. I'm glad to hear there's not much water in Zebra. I don't mind getting a little wet, but would prefer to not get totally soaked.
