I've been thinking I'd like to stand on top of Lone Peak in the Wasatch this year. Has anyone around here done it? I know it's usually a day hike but I'm wondering if it would be cool to backpack Lone Peak instead. Maybe hike up 2/3 to a meadow or something and setup camp then bag it with a small pack on in the morning. Thoughts?

Haven't done it yet, but I certainly would like to. I've been up Bells canyon a ways. I've heard there is a meadow area a little below the upper reservoir. That might make for a descent base camp?

Lemme know if you do it on a Fri/Sat, or just a Sat hike. I'd be really interested in going if the timing worked out.

My dad and I were just talking about Lone Peak yesterday. I think an overnighter could be a good way to go. Starting at Jacob's Ladder is the way to go according to my dad. Going up from Bells is almost technical. It'll probably be another couple years before I'm up to the challenge, but I hope you make it so I can drool over your pics in the meantime. :p

it's a fine overnight trip. i haven't done it in a few years, but it's solid. better to go early this year, it tends to dry out pretty good once the snow is gone. camping in the cirque is beautiful.

Thanks for the link. So if you were doing it again, would you do the same route or something else? Sounds like that first section really sucked.

it's a grind on the lower section, regardless of the route. i'm not sure there is an easy one, there is always tons of vertical. i've done up to lake hardy above alpine before as well, i thought that route sucked too, though the hamongogs are kind of interesting.

pick your poison - but yes, i'd definitely do it again. the cirque is awesome. if it wasn't for that trip report i posted, i'd have no recollection of the first few hours of that route anyways....
