Here in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes NP, it is a bit different: when you go backpacking and hiking in the backcountry, they warn you that you could encounter unexploded ordnance and encourage you to report it.
The army did use the backcountry as a bombing range in the 1940s, long before it was added to the park.
There is still a lot of stuff out there, and it's not unusual to find it.
I have seen some of them during my backcountry wanderings.
Heading back to the most remote areas of the park soon and will most likely find some stuff out there
