Grebe Lake - Yellowstone National Park - September

Well, I finally received my confirmation letter for my four day backpacking trip to Grebe Lake in September. Our group will backpacking in from the Grebe Lake Trailhead and will be setting up a base camp on the north side of the lake and doing a couple of day hikes from there. I will definitely be heading off-trail to the meadows along the headwaters of Lava Creek for one day hike. A second day hike might include a hike up to Observation Peak since the last time I was there the views were diminished due to smoke from forest fires in and around Yellowstone. Another possibility would be to drop down into the Tower Creek Drainage and explore some, or if I want to do something easy, just head west to Wolf Lake. Now if I could only get @Rockskipper to bring the bacon grease, we'd be all set. @Yvonne

Looks fantastic, but Grebe Lake is where a ranger I talked to a few days ago said they'd seen a bunch of grizz (9 at last count). I think it's a big moth-eating site. But heads up, cause I'm arranging with a friend to do an airdrop of several gallons of bacon grease. We'll have to be stealthy, cause the park might not approve. If they find out, I'm gonna just tell them Deputy Scat ordered it for baiting bears poachers wolverines ants sandwiches ...well, for something or other.

Make sure that drop is nice and easy there @Rockskipper. I don't want anything falling on my tent because then I'd have to double up with Circles and we all know how confused he gets.

I did Observation Peak last September, it's a pretty nice hike. I'm definitely up for it again.
Last year there was a lot of Grizzly scat on the trail near Cascade lake and a Grizzly with two-year-old cubs was hanging out between Grebe Lake TH and Ice Lake TH.
Definitely looking towards this trip.

Wife and I did Grebe Lake just to get out of the camp grounds last year. It was very peaceful to be camping around the lake. Our site was on the East side of Grebe Lake. The hike from the Grebe Trail Head is pretty boring with all the down fall trees.

Did you do any day hikes while staying at the lake?

Actually, we were just trying to get out of the noisy camp grounds before our scheduled hike in Bechler. The trail around the East side of the lake can be marshy, muddy and wet. (I am sure you are use to that). We were there first week of September. Came across dry bear scat in camp zone but never seen any bears.
