Sharing a journal of my backpacking trip to Glacier National Park starting the end of August through the first week in September. Right before our trip, the high elevations of the park received about 1 foot of snow, but a week later we had beautiful weather for the 8 days that we stayed in the backcountry. The trip included stays at Granite Park Chalet and Sperry Chalet. Over the 8-day trip, I hiked about 92 miles with about 67 miles with a backpack and total elevation gain of about 21,000 ft. It was an epic journey and adventure! Enjoy the pictures, which I will be providing captions, if you come along with me on this journey through my pictures of this trip.

Start of the journey would start the next morning at Logan Pass.
Day 1 of an 8 day trip in the backcountry. Today, we would travel 7 miles from Logan Pass to Granite Park Chalet. The day would also include a 1.4 mile round trip from the Grinnell Glacier Overlook. In July, my family hiked to Grinnell Glacier below, so this was a highlight to be able to look down at the glacier. We had a great day of hiking with epic views and the start of an epic journey! Granite Park Chalet - front
After supper at the Chalet, hiked up to the Grinnell Glacier Overlook. About a month previous, hiked with the family to the glacier below. Much different view from above.

Day 2 of an 8 day backcountry trip in the backcountry. In morning, saw a mama grizzly and two cubs near the chalet. Today would include a 4.5 mile round trip hike from Granite Park Chalet to Swiftcurrent Lookout Tower in the morning and later in the day would leave on a 9 mile solo hike from Granite Park Chalet over Swiftcurrent Pass down into the valley to Many Glacier campground. Hike would include spectacular views of the mountains, lakes and waterfalls. Saw a bull moose along the trail in the evening, but did not get a great picture. Will share a better picture of another bull moose on my hike the next day. The next day would be an 18 mile solo hike leaving Many Glacier to go over Piegan Pass and meet back up with my group.

Day 3 of an 8 day trip into the backcountry. Today, I will travel for a total of 18 miles with my pack before I reach camp. The pictures will take you from starting at Swiftcurrent Lake near Many Glacier Hotel to the top of Piegan Pass. I will pass through a beautiful valley seeing a bull moose, streams with views of mountains on both sides and waterfalls as I climb to the pass. This was an awesome hike with so many spectacular views. I will hike by myself today till I meet up with my group later in the day. Hope you enjoy the pictures as you follow along on this journey.
Today, start my hike from the Many Glacier Campground toward Swiftcurrent Lake and the Many Glacier Hotel. With the trail closed on the west side of the lake added a bit more mileage for a long hike today.

Lake Josephine coming into view. This lake is so exceptional for it breathtaking views. In the mountains above is Grinnell Glacier. Hiked up to Grinnell Glacier in July. Headed in a different direction today. Hike to and from Grinnell Glacier is phenomenal for views both ways to and from the Glacier.

View on the other side of the pass. Now, I head down the otherside. My phone ran out of battery at this point, so this day will end at Reynold’s Creek a few miles later. This hike had great views, but no waterfalls and streams till the end.
Day 4 of an 8 day hiking in the backcountry. Today, we would hike about 7 miles from Reynolds Creek Campsite to Gunsight Lake Campsite. We would travel through the valley with mountains on each side and take a detour to Florence Falls. We would see bear scat and hear about bears from others, but would only see a couple in the far distance. Gunsight Lake is another spectacular lake surrounded by the mountains. We hiked up to the pass in the evening to see the sunset and return in the dark for a round trip of about 7 miles and some elevation gain

Detour to Florence Falls – worth the extra 1.2 miles. We spent some time here enjoying lunch at the falls. Later we would hear from another group that came after us where a bear came down from the top of the falls. It stood up and checked them out and then turned around and went back up the trail to the top of the falls.

Day 5 of an 8 day trip in the backcountry. On this day, we would travel back from Gunsight Lake as the trail was closed between Gunsight Pass and Sperry Chalet. We would need to walk back to the Going to the Sun Road and then travel to the Sperry Trailhead located near McDonald Lodge. We would have lunch at McDonald Lodge before heading up the trail to Snyder Lake where we would camp for the night. This day would be a warm day as we would not have much shade after lunch traveling through the area that had burned in the Sprague Fire in 2017 that destroyed the Sperry Chalet which was eventually rebuilt. Today's journey would be cover about 11.5 miles on the trails. Tomorrow will take us up to Sperry Chalet. Enjoying the journey!

Day 6 of an 8 day trip hiking in the backcountry. Today, we would leave Snyder Lake to travel back to Sperry Trail and continue our trip up the mountain to Sperry Chalet. Sperry Chalet would burn down in the 2017 Sprague fire, but has since been rebuilt and historically preserved. Tonight, we will stay in the backcountry campsite about 0.5 miles from the chalet. This campsite was is in my top five best campsites based on its location and view. We will eat supper of a four course meal at the dining hall near the chalet. We would see several mountain goats up close around the chalet buildings. Overall hiking today was about 10 miles. Tomorrow, we will check into the chalet and hike up to Sperry Glacier. Enjoying the epic journey.

Horse supply train on its way back from Sperry Chalet. They make this trip twice a week. There is no electricity at Sperry Chalet, so they use propane for cooking, running refrigerators, and lighting.

There were many mountain goats around the chalet. We needed to be careful not to leave our gear laying out, otherwise they may take it up the mountain or chew on it.

Below is the dining hall near the chalet. I made arrangements before the trip to have our supper and breakfast at the chalet even though we were staying in the campground nearby.
Dining hall at the chalet. They served supper at 7 pm and as people lined up, the mountain goats were coming down from the mountain as well as they seemed to know what time it was.
Our meal tonight was a treat after eating freeze-dried meals in the backcountry. We had four courses being salad, soup, entrée, and dessert.
After supper, hiked up to Lincoln Pass and part way up to the peak of Lincoln Mountain. The lake in the distance is Lake Ellen Wilson with a waterfall cascading down from the lake. Two days previous, I had taken a picture of Lake Ellen Wilson from Gunsight pass. The trail to Lake Ellen Wilson was closed when we were at Gunsight Pass due to bears otherwise our hope would have been to camp at Lake Ellen Wilson the previous night.
Day 7 of an 8 day trip into the backcountry. Today, we would have breakfast at the Sperry Chalet dining hall, then head back to the Sperry Campground to take down camp as we would be staying in the chalet dormitory tonight. We would leave our main packs at the dining hall and planned to go up to Comeau Pass then to Sperry Glacier in the morning. We would come back for a late lunch at the dining hall before checking into Sperry Chalet. After checking in, we would relax at a nearby stream and hang out on the balcony of the chalet. In the evening, we would eat another wonderful meal at the chalet. In the evening near sunset, they would have a hot drink bar of coffee, tea, and hot chocolate along with any left over desserts from the meal the night before. We did make another trip to Lincoln Pass for the sunset, before coming back for some hot chocolate. Nearing the end of this awesome trip!

Dining Hall at Sperry Chalet – check out the old mailbox – still send mail down with the pack horses. We had lunch twice at here and they served amazing grilled cheese sandwiches with your choice of meat. Lemonade was the choice of drink here. Sperry Chalet had running water at the dining hall.

Sperry Glacier – or pieces of it. Pictures from the past show the glacier spreading across this whole area in the past. There were other areas of substantial portions of the glacier.
Looking east from Comeau Pass. If I ever come back to this area, I would love to trek to the far side where the green area is called Floral Park and further down to look down into Avalanche Lake from the top. It would be an epic off-trail experience.

Sperry Chalet dormitory – this is where would stay tonight. The dormitory burned in 2017 with only the walls left standing. The building was restored and completed in 2020. Our understanding is that from people that stayed here before the fire, they did an amazing job of restoring it to its original layout.
When we checked in, we were told that we have one of the best rooms in the chalet. Upper floor looking out towards Lake McDonald in the valley below. We were blessed with amazing views.

This is what I call a fancy pit toilet at the Sperry Chalet. They did have two sinks with running water for brushing teeth, etc. No showers at the chalet. No flushing toilet, just a very nice pit toilet. Talking with staff later in the day, all the human waste “poop” from the facility at the end of the season is placed in barrels and hauled out by helicopter.

Final day of an 8 day trip into the backcountry. Today, we hike the 6.5 miles down the mountain to Lake McDonald. After we finished the hike, we would drive the Going to Sun Road to Apgar and, then to West Glacier. Spent the rest of the day doing a little shopping and packing up to leave on the train in the morning. Included a few pictures and videos leaving on the train in the morning to head home. It has been an awesome trip with wonderful weather. Thanks for tagging along as I journaled this epic journey!

Final day of an 8 day trip into the backcountry. Today, we hike the 6.5 miles down the mountain to Lake McDonald. After we finished the hike, we would drive the Going to Sun Road to Apgar and, then to West Glacier. Spent the rest of the day doing a little shopping and packing up to leave on the train in the morning. Included a few pictures and videos leaving on the train in the morning to head home. It has been an awesome trip with wonderful weather. Thanks for tagging along as I journaled this epic journey!
