Getting Naked Outdoors

I've been following BCP for about a year and became a member a while ago, but I have opened a new profile to ask one question. This would indicate that I'm a bit embarrassed, which is true, and want to maintain anonymity on this while posting freely on other topics, although it does come at the risk of being thought of as some weird troll. However, I've decided to risk it to satisfy my curiosity.

My thoughts were prompted by a discussion I had on another website, and my readings in the works of some of the big "nature guru" guys, like Colin Fletcher, John Muir, and Henry David Thoreau. I noticed that in their writings each eventually mentions times when they got naked outdoors, and commented on how natural and uninhibited it made them feel. There was no shame to this, and none of them highlighted any sexual aspect of these times. Fletcher wrote more recently, but Muir and Thoreau wrote over a hundred years ago when, presumably, they might have faced more disapproval for such admissions, and perhaps this reflects on public attitudes in some way. Because I read their writings over a fairly short time period I was struck that with the regularity with which it was mentioned.

I wondered if outdoorsy people aren't usually, at some time or another, given to trying this. I will admit that I have when I have been remote enough that I could be confident no one would be around, since becoming a registered sex offender is not a personal goal. The sense of freedom, the idea of being where one can openly do what would be so transgressive in any other setting, was exhilarating and liberating, and for me also there was no sexual element to it at all.

So when I was on a hiking-oriented website recently and chatting with a guy the discussion trended in this direction after a time and he let me know that there is a real, albeit small, subculture of naked hikers out there. This got me to wondering if people who are aficionados of the great outdoors, presumably pre-disposed to personal freedom, and lovers of being natural, open, and free, aren't drawn to getting naked in the wild at some time in their outdoor explorations. I hypothesize that, having those personal traits, they would be. The hiker guy said that, in his experience, "serious" and experienced hikers were more relaxed about outdoor nudity than others, and felt no judgment about it.

What do you think? And thanks for not thinking I'm a weirdo or a pervert (that is if you aren't thinking I am!).

I don't find this strange at all. What's more natural than being butt naked in the great outdoors? We're all basically just a bunch of animals in pants, right? My only issue is just being respectful of other outdoor users who may not want to see it, families, etc.

I tried naked hiking one time in my twenties. I had a crush on a girl who talked about doing it frequently. I really wanted to do it with her. Hike, that is! So one day, I stripped down, put my clothes in my pack and started wandering through the woods in Logan Canyon (off trail). I swear not 100 yards into it, I startled a moose and it went storming away and scared the crap out of me. I know that clothes do not protect you from moose trampling, but I sure felt a lot more vulnerable in that moment.

More recently, I've come to really enjoy skinny dipping at Lake Powell on hot summer days and nights. I would echo the natural and uninhibited feeling that the "nature guys" mention. Kinda the same feeling when I go off to do my business backpacking. No pants around my knees, I hang them in the trees! :) It feels great! As far as the lake, it's usually with only my wife around, but one time last year I had a few too many G&T's on a really hot summer night and... yeah. But for actual hiking, I like clothes. If I ran into someone naked on the trail, I'd get a chuckle out of it, but I couldn't blame them for doing it.

I don't think it would be feasible in the northeast unless you were on private land. Our wild areas aren't as big and remote as out west so there'd be a pretty decent chance of having the authorities called on you. The concept doesn't bother me but it's not something I've ever felt the urge to try personally. I do however, think it's BS for anyone (like the guy you described on the other forum) to make the claim that it's something that all "real" outdoorsmen or "aficionados" partake in. That sounds sort of snobby and judgmental.

I see naked hikers at a far higher rate than one would expect, actually. If you're wondering about reaction, mine is usually "oh hey!" followed by some giggles after we pass, followed by not thinking much about it.

The last time, I came across a couple. The woman was wearing binoculars around her neck and an incongruous sun hat and nothing else.

When hiking, I wear clothes. I'm not opposed to the odd nude sunbathing or swimming experience, though. I usually do those things waaaaaaaay past where I figure most people will stop hiking.

Had a friend that used to hike naked in the Grand Canyon......would get burnt places I wouldn't want all the time.....
This was back in the 'hippie' days where we saw a lot of naked people.....
I wouldn't and kinda think people doing it are a little different. It's kind of like other things, do what you want but you need to consider other people...do they really want to see you naked on the trail, I don't go hiking for that. But my reaction is the same, some hey! then snickering after they are past.
Skinny dipping, sitting on the edge of a cliff naked and such, yes. Hiking no.

Those you mentioned were out in nature before it was fashionable and crowded.........

I backpacked all of lower John's Canyon buck naked, except for a shirt socks and shoes. Did not see a soul. It was a very liberating experience. I forgot I was not wearing clothes after about an hour, and I spent three days that way. The only distressing part was when I got to my car I almost just got in and drove away without my clothes on.

Hiking without clothes doesn't interest me in the least, mostly because I like the little extra protection from getting scraped up. I have been on many river trips down Westwater and Dinosaur where seeing a naked person on another boat is pretty much guaranteed. I say if that's your thing go for it. Anyone who gets offended by a naked person in the wilderness needs to check themselves. Something for you UL backpackers to consider I guess??

Just hiking in shorts instead of pants gets me pretty scraped up sometimes. I imaging without any pants I would get scarped in places that would be less than comfortable. I would say do what you want, but keep it to yourself. I don't want to see it.

True that. I've run into people on the trail late in the season who see my legs and think that I'm in some sort of trouble or injured because they're so torn up from hiking all year. I run way too hot to hike in pants though. I'm okay with torn up legs, torn up 'other stuff', not so much.

Plus knowing you Nick, you are a bit accident prone. :) I would have as much protection as I could if I were you.

Hey now! 2015 has been a rough start, but I can only think of one major trail injury before that! Just wait, I've got all sorts of totally uneventful trips coming up (I hope!). ;)

Hiking naked, no thanks (scrapes, mosquitoes, other people who are just weird seeing you like that, etc). But arriving at your destination, stripping everything off and going for a swim? Awesome! Lying around naked on the rocks afterward? Really awesome! Just remember to put sunscreen on the parts that don't usually see the sun. There's something about being naked in water that just feels so liberating. I went to a popular nude beach here in San Diego last summer and lying out naked was weird, but body surfing felt exhilarating.

The best time Stan and I have ever had was when we hiked to a remote lake that doesn't have an official trail (any markers have been knocked down, that's how much people guard this lake). It was hot, the lake is in a rock basin, and we had the whole place to ourselves. Doesn't get any better!

I just have to add one thing. There are certain sitautions when I am TOTALLY OKAY with running into certain nude people outdoors. Case in point: http://backcountrypost.com/threads/wind-rivers-temple-lake-loop.123/ (story is about half way in as we approached Deep Lake) Unforgettable... thanks mystery lady.

As I started hiking around the edge of Deep Lake, I noticed a couple of people near the shore about halfway up the lake. It appeared that one of them was not wearing much. Strange as it was overcast and a bit chilly out. I knew they could see me coming so I kept hiking down the trail. I lost sight of them for a minute until I rounded a patch of trees and came within 100 feet of them. There I saw a very attractive woman in the lake about thigh deep and completely topless. She was quite the exhibitionist, when I was about 100 feet away she yelled out to me, "it's SO warm in here!". I know, this sounds like the plot line to a cheap porno, but it really happened. In the interest of keeping this website safe for work, I won't be posting any proof. If we're ever sitting around a campfire together, ask me to tell you the rest of the story. ;)

I'm sure there's more to your story but when I read this I had a funny visual. I pictured you stumbling into this scene, her yelling out to you about the water being warm, and then you bringing your camera up to your eye and clicking away without even responding to her lol.

Ha! I was feeling a little shy about the whole experience. Meanwhile my friend behind me on the trail dropped his pack and put on the long lens. He's even got one of her looking right at the camera smiling ear to ear. It's been like 4 years, I think this thread needs pics... big pixels added to keep it family-friendly and to protect the not-so-innocent.
