Hey all, new to the forum!

I am just getting into backoacj8ng. I just purchased some new gear, and am looking for an overnight hike in Utah to try it all out. I am just getting into shape this year, so am looking for 5-10 miles round trip, something long enough to test out my gear while being reasonably close to civilization should something go wrong.

I am looking to go in the next few weeks, and am open to anywhere in the Utah. As a Utah native, I am familiar with much of the state.

Thanks for your insights!

You might consider a trip in Capitol Reef, or the Needles in Canyonlands. Cedar Mesa also has good options. I've been looking at backpacking trips in the next couple of weeks as well. Hopefully it will be a cool enough May that I can enjoy the desert before it gets too HOT. It's hard when it's 100 degree in the dessert but the Uintas aren't open yet and won't be for a while. Check out the trip reports under the Backpacking tab. Lots of good info in there to gather from.

Coyote Gulch near Escalante is a classic for good reason. A tad longer than your 5-10 mi requirement, but the miles are fairly quick and you don't need to worry about getting a permit in advance- just fill it out at the trailhead.
