Crazy compass

I was out at the Swell this weekend hiking on the slickrock above Wild Horse, and I pulled out my phone to use the compass to figure out where Wild Horse Window was. My compass, however, was telling me the waypoint was back towards the trailhead. I confirmed that I was using the right waypoint, fiddled with it, restarted the app, restarted my phone...no luck. The compass was all over the place, but mostly pointing the opposite direction.

So I got my wife's phone, opened a different app, and got the exact same results.

Then I noticed all the red spots in the slickrock around me and wondered if that was iron that was affecting the compass.

I ultimately just figured my place on the map and made my way there without any problems.

But I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this or if you know why it was happening at this specific location.
