My friend Smokey has long insisted that a candle lantern is a must-have when backpacking in places where a fire is not allowed. At first I was kind of annoyed by the light. I thought it made star-gazing more difficult. But years later it really grew on me. When it's dark out, you don't have a fire and still want the campfire experience, a candle lantern can be pretty amazing.

Even when we were car camping in The Maze. We would sit the tiny little candle lantern on the ground and surround it in our camp chairs. Add beer and some good conversation and it almost felt like a campfire!

I've never really caught a photo of Taylor's lantern except in this shot at Peek-a-boo Arch. This was a 30-second exposure so it makes it look like a fire.

So my question is; do any of you use a candle lantern and if so, what do you like? I'm not really interested in LED battery-powered lanterns. I think the light from them is about as pleasant as someone shining a headlamp into my eyes. I'm talking about real candle lanterns.

I was thinking about picking up one of these two:

This is funny.. I have had a candle lantern for 10 years.. and have never used it.

I have a Brunton lantern that runs on fuel canisters - I love it. nice, compact, and puts off a ton of light.
