Camping at or near Elkhart Park?

Curious if anyone here has experience and perhaps some sound advice on camping at or around Elkhart Park in the Windies. Will be arriving on a Wednesday night, and hope to be on the trail early the next morning. So close proximity to the trailhead is a bonus, but not a huge deal. Looks like Trails End CG only has 8 first come-first serve sites, so I'm not going to depend on that. Fremont Lake and Half Moon also appear to be booked. So that leaves me with dispersed camping, which I'd actually prefer anyhow. But it seems my options there may be limited, too, as I'm not seeing too many spur roads on the topo. Anyone here have any go-to primitive sites that they wouldn't mind sharing with me? Or am I destined to either sleep in the Xterra at the trailhead or splurge for a spendy dog-friendly hotel in Pinedale? Cheers.
