Was planning on doing the day hike from Wire pass to the Buckskin Gulch this coming week-end (March 11). Called the ranger station in Kanab, and they say that the canyon might not be passable as yet (too much water), although he said to let him know if we were successful. He wasn't very helpful.

Has anyone gone to this area lately ?

I wonder if the ranger meant the water crossing on Buckskin Gulch, driving on House Rock Valley Rd to the Wire Pass parking lot.. Can't imagine it's not hikable. Hmmmm!

I think he meant hiking down the Gulch to the Paria junction. Perhaps they're told to err on the side of over-cautioning people ?

There have been some pretty awful early season Buckskin stories posted here... and some pretty good ones too. Neoprene socks and footwear appropriate for sticky mud slogging could be your friend if there is a lot of standing water. And yeah, they probably do tend to over-caution, but for pretty good reason. That's a bad place to be if the conditions aren't pretty good.

Wow!! That's some serious water coming down the Paria. What a fun way to go thru.

i am so happy I hiked it when it was totally dry, even the cesspool was dry :)

Every water year is different but I ran Buckskin out to the confluence and back in February 2015. We were in running clothes (t-shirts, shorts and running shoes). Several places of chest high water but in and out quickly and running we warmed up in short order. December 2015 we ran it again this time in Buckskin and out Paria. Similar water situation in Buckskin but I likely wouldn't run Paria in the winter dress as we were. Water was generally ankle to knee deep but too much time in the water (unlike in and out in Buckskin) without the opportunity for the feet to warm up again. In both cases, the Kanab weather of the day was highs in the lower 50's. Without recent precip in the drainage area, I can't imagine any issues with Buckskin this time of year.

Spoke with a ranger on the phone yesterday (Kanab station) and he said there is some thigh high sections of water in Buckskin. The road to Wire Pass has also been graded.

anyone been up here recently? Would love some fresh conditions. Thanks

My friend and I hiked Paria Canyon last week and hiked part way up Buckskin Gulch from the confluence. Not much water in the lower end of Buckskin, but I can't speak for anything above the rock jam. I damn near stepped on a baby rattlesnake, so watch your step if you go. The Paria was flowing at the trailhead, but then stopped for a few miles until we reached the confluence with Buckskin. Good water flow from that point on. The weather was HOT!!!
