Does anyone know of a good park to go backpacking and camp overnight in maryland preferably west of Baltimore but not towards extreme parts of Maryland?

Thanks

you best bets are in VA/WVA...Shenandoah NP, Dolly Sods Wilderness...you'll probably have to do some driving to reach good backpacking destinations. Maryland has 40 miles of the Appalachian Trail cutting thru it, that would be the closest option.

Dolly Sods Wilderness is West Virginia is your best option.

The Sods is a good option, as is Otter Creek. They're about 4 hours from Bmore. If you want to stay closer, I recommend hopping on the AT either out of Harper's Ferry, or the trailhead NW of Frederick. It is where I-70 and 40 intersect, a nice lot to leave your car.

Ok thanks

Hi Flaming: Been gone for many weeks, just catching up now. Most places that are good have been mentioned. If you want really close to Baltimore there is Patapsco State park in Catonsville, Md. Some great mountain biking in that park as well as camping spots. Frederick area has great camping and mnt biking and four wheeling. This IS the hardest mnt biking in the state, Frederick Watershed. If 4 wheeling is your thing then check out Green Ridge St forest, primitive camping or George Washington St Forest near Elizabeth Furnace. BUT the best outdoor area is W. Va, Monongahela St. For.

What do you enjoy in the outdoors? I can get more specific if know what you like.

Where is the closest place to Baltimore for best backcountry camping?

The best is always relative. I happen to love Old Rag. It is 2-2.5 hrs from B-more. Great hike, rocky crag with a unique trail along the ridgeline. Just drop off the backside to camp. Skyline drive is the next ridge over.

Two questions : has anyone hiked the whole AT from PA to WV in one trek? If so, how many days did it take you? Also, has anyone gone BP in green Ridge sf? Any tips? Thx

Hey BmoreOut,

It's been over 20 years since I've been to Green Ridge, sorry. SoBo on the AT from MD->WV is generally pretty easy terrain, # of days is kind of a HYOY thing. If one isn't trail hard, I'd plan 4-5 days. Speedy people will go 2-3. If I were going today, my target based on shelters/campsites would be about 3.5 days from Pen Mar to Harpers Ferry. I'd highly recommend the PATC Map 5/6, this will list shelters & h2o sources.

Hope this helps!

Thanks, SPAC3MAN. I'll be sure to get the Patc map.

It takes 3-4 days for regular folks to hike the AT in MD. It is very easy, ~40 miles. These days people try to do the 4 state challenge. Start in Va hike through W.Va, then MD ending in PA. They do this in 1 day, midnight to midnight. Here's a break down for the area you want to hike.
