I have a work trip to Aspen CO this week and was looking for maybe some shortish hikes/trail runs to do in the morning, would appreciate suggestions that don't involve too much driving.

It sounds like the Maroon Lakes area isn't open until Memorial Day-- but is it reasonable to park where the road gets snowy and go to the lake on foot?

Thanks!

The Red Hill/Mushroom Rock area in Carbondale is fun. It is at the intersection of Hwy. 82 and 133. The road to Maroon Bells is closed at the entrance gate, so you have a 4 mile hike to the lakes.

Turns out the Maroon Creek road opened yesterday, so today I drove up there. Not too many people, I only saw about a half-dozen while hiking up to Crater Lake. Some nasty postholeing due to the warm day though, shorts and sneakers weren't the way to go.

Glad you got up there. I don't remember the road opening up so early.

I am. I live in Carbondale.
I'll buy you a beer.

Sounds like fun. Will PM you. I'm in central GWS, but can go anywhere. I lived in Bonedale for awhile and loved it.
