Hey guys, I'm a New Yorker taking a trip out west in early October for a week and a half, flying to SLC the evening of 10/2, leaving Vegas afternoon 10/12. I had two guys I expected to come who might both be bailing. I've spent about 5 weeks out in southern Utah over the last 2.5 years and fallen in love and gotten relatively familiar with the area. I'm looking for suggestions of some shorter 1-2 night backpack trips that I might do solo. I know I need to be careful not to get too ambitious considering my (relative) inexperience both in terms of tackling tougher terrain (definitely nothing too technical), managing/planning water, and navigation with map and compass. Having said that, I am more interested in seeing good backcountry (escalante canyons, Capitol reef) than hiking Angels landing and the narrows again for the umpteenth time.

I plan on spending at least a few days at gsenm. I'll go see the dry fork slots, hike coyote gulch with a detour to go see sunset (sunrise?) arch as well. Thought about hiking to the golden cathedral in neon.

Sorry this is so long winded. Anyway, just looking for suggestions for how to spend a week and a half in the region for somebody with somewhat limited experience, particularly solo, and probably a rental car that lacks 4wd and high clearance, but doesn't want too much of the national park tourist experience.

Also relevant, probably staying out of Moab (although I could be swayed) and focusing more towards the area from Capitol reef to Zion, just to keep travel to a minimum. Although I'd like to visit the north rim if it ends up fitting in.

Any help is very much appreciated!
