UHT - Day 1: West Fork Whiterocks to Fox Lake

I did a loop in this area summer of 2016. I much preferred the trail and scenery in the Reader Lakes area and over North Pole Pass than the Whiterocks to Fox Lake way. The direct route from Upper Reader Lake to North Pole Pass was stunning . I'm all about the Chepeta Lake TH. Much less horse...

    Hell Hole Lake, August 2015

I did this a couple of years ago. I too was miffed at the whole locked gate fiasco. I called the ranger office and they knew nothing about the road or the gate. I did the same approach from the Mirror Lake Highway and had to pick my way across a few streams and bogs to get to what was clearly...

Daddy Daughter: To the Notch & 17 Lakes

Awesome. I also got my daughter out for an over-nighter in the Uintas when she was 6. Great way to start. I have done this loop before as a day hike, and believe it to not actually got lost. My confusion was when to leave the Notch Trail to head towards the Twin Lakes. Some people said there...

    Spring at Toroweap

I must have been reading an old source which was written before it was backcountry permitted. It sounds there was a time when it was first come first serve. My bad.

    Spring at Toroweap

Does that campground ever fill up? I know it is first come first serve, so what is the risk of getting out there and finding no place to camp?

    Upper Salt Creek Canyon, again

I suppose you can just keep looking every day and maybe there will be a cancellation. This is a great area and I recommend reading the other Salt Creek trip reports as well. Mine sort of assumes one has read the other ones.

    Upper Salt Creek Canyon, again

I am sure nothing in this trip report is any new discovery, but I thought I'd tell you my experience March 27-29 compared to a trip I did in June about 6 years ago. First off, the whole permitting thing is very different now as I am sure lots of other people already know. It was not online 6...

    Salt Creek, Canyonlands

Looking at a detail topo map, it looks like there are other canyons which could be hiding lots of things but don't have a designated trail in them anymore. Perhaps they did once when there was cattle grazing. An example is West Fork of Salt Creek. Looks like there was an old route in there a...

    Salt Creek, Canyonlands

Probably so. They also have a dash-tag for your vehicle now which they didn't have a couple of years ago.

    Salt Creek, Canyonlands

Yes, you are right. I talked to the backcountry office at the Needles Visitors' Center. They told me about removing the ammo boxes, having to carry your own bear container, also needing to keep your permit on your person at all times, increased presence by rangers to enforce the various rules...

    Salt Creek, Canyonlands

I have received my permit and it is telling me I need to have a bear container. I thought all the campsites had metal bear containers near them for general use. Do I need to carry in my own container?

    Salt Creek, Canyonlands

Thanks. I got my SC backcountry permits for the 27 and 28. Looks like I got the last 2 permits for any backcountry site in the whole Park. Expect a busy weekend.

    Salt Creek, Canyonlands

There is a peninsula sticking out into Salt Creek Canyon that on my topo map is labeled as Cathedral Point. I think it might be the same thing as Big Pocket Overlook. So you say there is a trail from this peninsula into Big Pocket? Interesting because other blogs have said people looked for a...

    Salt Creek, Canyonlands

Don't suppose you have any idea how quickly the Squaw Flat CG fills up on a Friday in late March? 9am? noon? 4pm?

    Salt Creek, Canyonlands

Yes, I have seen the policy of intentional neglect by the NPS a few times. There are places where a road goes from BLM or NF to NP and right at that the boundary the road goes to total crap. The BLM and NF might grade once a year and the NPS is trying to get the road to disintegrate on its...

    Salt Creek, Canyonlands

Thanks. I've seen some discussion about hiking from Cathedral Point to Big Pocket. Ever done it?

    Salt Creek, Canyonlands

Thanks! So if someone was doing the Salt Creek through backpack, then is the only way out the north is via Squaw Flat and not Cave Spring? I imagine if the Salt Creek/Horse Canyon road is impassible due to quicksand, then it would also be not-backpackable. Or is that an incorrect assumption...
