If you're up for some reading here are the case files from the NPS for the Brian Matayoshi and John Wallace grizzly caused deaths from 2011. They include witness reports, ranger reports, evidence photos(some blacked out for privacy reasons), maps and aerial photos. They used to have the 911...
Thanks Art! Amazing how far cell phone cameras have come. haha... It was great weather up there yesterday and open water mixed with ice on all the lakes along the highway.
If you didn't make it up there @WasatchWill there are definitely snow drifts around the Ruth Lake area, but there were a few cars parked at the trailhead anyway. This photo was near Christmas Meadows yesterday.
Nice capture of Seward and the surrounding area. I loved Alaska when I was there and my dinner cruise out of Seward was awesome! At Exit Glacier is interesting to see how far the glacier has receded over the last 100 years or so.
I went on a drive up the Mirror Lake highway this morning. The road is clear up until about a few miles from the Provo River Falls. Snow packed, but only 1 to 1-1/2 feet if that. Looks like plows have made a big pile of snow at that point to deter vehicles. Patchy snow drifts up to that point...
Nice! I did a tour there in 2013 on Kenai Fjords Tours. We did a dinner cruise to Fox Island. $70 bucks isn't too bad for a scenic cruise and prime rib/salmon dinner.
Although a lot of the park concession employees are still kids, some choose and want the opportunity to work and enjoy beautiful places such as Yellowstone etc.. My friend worked in Yellowstone for a summer and had a blast. Let's face it though park food is made for the masses and usually when...
We did not go there unfortunately. :( We had a puppy with us, so no real hiking.
This was taken in Capitol Gorge with my cell phone. There are snow patches in the shade, but I would say that there isn't enough to impact a trip. There is definitely more snow the higher you get though. The Fruita...
It is all about your preference. I used to use a MSR Wind Pro with a pot. I very rarely cooked anything in the pot other than just boiling water, so I switched to a Jet Boil Sol. It saves space and a little weight. A pan probably doesn't take up much space, but it takes a little more space and...
Definitely doable as a day hike if you start early. Brutal on the legs with a pack anyway! @DrNed I did it in May of 2012' with a few right here on BCP, here is also Nick's report http://backcountrypost.com/forum/threads/the-west-rim-of-zion-national-park.871/. Just in case you didn't see it yet..
In the early 90's I went to Yellowstone to visit a friend that was working at Old Faithful Lodge. We had been partying at the employee pub and then in the dorm room. I decided that some fresh air was needed, so I went I for a walk.
I first stopped at Old Faithful Geyser and sat there for about...
