    Ute Creek-CDT-Weminuche Loop

Unfortunately this area was hit hard by the West Fork Complex fire over the past week. Thirty Mile campground is gone. Last report they are trying to keep the fire from the dam on the Rio Grande reservoir. With all the beetle kill in the area this fire complex has spread fast. Sad.

    Ute Creek, Weminuche Wilderness

Great trip report. Last summer we car camped at the Thirty Mile Campground on the Rio Grande River. We day hiked up the Weminuche Trail with the plan of hiking to the base of the Rio Grande Pyramid and the Window. We got to the Skyline Trail spur but unfortunately we had to turn around due to...

Nick, how do you like the Olympus 9-18mm? I have been looking at it for my G3. Where did you get it from?

    Western Mountaineering

I have a WM Caribou and I love it. It is rated at 35 degrees but have slept in colder temps with no problem. The bag weighs a little over a pound and stuffs down to about the size of a loaf of bread. I chose it because it has a wider cut in the shoulder region. Good quality bags - made in USA.

    Snowshoeing For Dummies

I have a pair of Crescent Moon snowshoes and use my trekking poles with baskets. I carry a pack when I am out for a while so I can shed layers. You will find yourself changing layers depending on your activity level. I use water bottles instead of a bladder to eliminate the freezing issue. MoJo...

    Backcountry Vehicles

My current vehicle is a 12 Subaru Forester. It replaced a 03 Jeep Liberty. Has almost 9" of ground clearance and gets 30+ mpg - almost twice what the Jeep got. I plan on adding skid plates and Yoko Geolander AT/S tires. As to what Subies can do, there is a video on offroadsubarus.com of a 05...

Looking for the perfect town to retire in a la "Northern Exposure"

Southwest CO ain't bad. We moved to Pagosa Springs, CO about 8 years ago from OH. We are about an hour east of Durango which is also a great town. My son goes to Fort Lewis College and loves Durango. I think the San Juans are the most spectacular range in the Rockies. Mesa Verde, Great Sand...

    Noob camera suggestions

My G3 arrived yesterday. Nice size and weight. Have not had much of a chance to play with it yet. Dan, thanks for the info on available lens for it. According to the previous posts it appears that you can get an adapter to use older manual lenses - is that true? I have an old Pentax K1000 with...

Thanks Dan for your insight into the m 4/3 cameras. I decided to pull the trigger on the G3. Found it new with kit lens on Amazon for 399 (last week when I was looking at them they were 449). Looking forward to using it. Thanks again everyone for your input. Great site!

    Noob camera suggestions

Thanks everyone for your input. I had been doing a fair amount of research on the micro 4/3 cameras but did not know anyone who had used one. It seemed like a good system which fell between the DSLR and the PAS cameras and were light and small enough to carry into the backcountry. Nick, thanks...

    Noob camera suggestions

I have been lurking on this site for about a month now and am amazed at the quality of pictures posted on this site. I am sure this has been addressed somewhere on this site but changes in cameras and software seemed to occur rapidly. What I am looking for is a camera to upgrade from my current...

    Noobs: Introduce Yourself!

I'm Joe. Moved to SW Colorado about 8 years ago from Ohio and have never looked back. Still trying to explore all the Four Corners and San Juans have to offer. Enjoy backpacking, camping, biking, photography and exploring the backroads as much as my Subaru will let me. Hope to get some great...
