San Juan Mtns - late June too early?

Hi Janice. With a half century of hiking, climbing ,camping and so on behind me in Colorado I would say that for optimum conditions late June is too early for Blue Lakes and Ice Lake Basin . The Sneffles Highline Trail has great exposure to the south so that would be good at least down low. All...

    Changes to BCP

Maybe you can get some inspiration from this Album art. Of course it has way too much detail for a logo and copying too much would be a no no. Just the essential elements could work. I wish that I had a poster of this scene.

government shutdown effects on national forests?

Hunting seasons have already begun in the Western States. No way the National Forests and BLM lands will close.

    Uncompahgre Wilderness

Even if bagging some peaks is not what you like to do this recent trip report shows what the peaks around the Middle Fork look like. Personally I like pointy peaks. I day hiked the Middle Fork on 8/29 and saw 6 other people and none went as far as I did. Just saying...

    Uncompahgre Wilderness

The classic trip in there is the Middle and East Forks of the Cimarron River Loop. You can do it in either direction and a car shuttle is helpful. A bigger trip would be to take either fork of the Cimarron and then head south and go out the Matterhorn Trail. There aren't lakes for...

Brooks Range trek - Anaktuvuk Pass to the Haul Road - Cancelled Flight - last minute change-up

A trip like this proves that with good route planning you don't necessarily have to go through the big expense of bush flights to have great scenery in the Brooks Range. Two trips there for me isn't enough. I need to go back. Excellent report.

    Gore high traverse

Yep, I have been in the Silverthorne-Frisco area since 1977. I don't have my own copy of the Orme's Atlas but I borrowed one once and wrote the pass names on my Topo maps. Should be able to help you out. I do have my own copy of " Mountaineering In The Gore Range" by Joe Kramarsic which has a...

    Gore high traverse

A very nice report. The Gore Range has been my "backyard" for the last 46 years. I appreciate you following the informal custom of not telling exactly where you were in the Range. If only I had done even more when I was young. Thanks

    Interesting/mysterious patterns Needles District, Canyonlands

The official " official " closure of this area was in the spring of 1995 with this management plan ,although the area was likely managed as closed earlier in the 90's. I participated in the scoping process for the management plan and thus was on the mailing list. I was able to make a brief...

    Peter Sinks

I have a book THE SIBERIANS written by FARLEY MOWAT in 1971. "The cold of Yakutia is proverbial-and with reason. The two coldest inhabited places on earth Verkhoyansk and Oimyakon are within it's borders. Although they lie four hundred miles apart ,each has recorded an official low of 90F below...

THE GOLDEN STAIRS, KAIPAROWITS PLATEAU, A SEQUEL

My BLM map shows a trail that I marked in red. I don't see that on any USGS map. I very much dislike the metric 1:100000 maps but the Smoky Mountain map from 1985 shows much of the area we are talking about. Link for the entire map...

THE GOLDEN STAIRS, KAIPAROWITS PLATEAU, A SEQUEL

I have an old BLM map that shows 4 trails going through the Straight Cliffs, none of them are named. One of those could be your route but maps being what they are I can only guess which one. I may need to try 1 or 2 of those trails someday. Thanks for the inspiration.

    Car Camping Tent Suggestions

I was thinking of a larger diameter than 3/8 but maybe that is what fits the hole on the tent. There are 1/4 " and 1/2" impact drivers. 1/4 " is for driving deck screws ,etc and 1/2" would probably take the lugnuts off your vehicle. The major brands like DEWALT, MAKITA MILWAUKEE are all very...

    Car Camping Tent Suggestions

For lag screws you will want a cordless IMPACT DRIVER which is designed to drive in fasteners . A drill could work but not as well. You can drill holes with a n IMPACT DRIVER if properly equipped. What size lags are you considering? Bigger lags equals bigger IMPACT DRIVER.

Lake Powell and the 'return' of Glen Canyon

Given the very remote chance that a precision earthquake will take down Glen Canyon Dam and the even more remote chance that a G W Hayduke type saboteur will blow up the Damn Dam a group of sponsors have started a contest to reconnect the Colorado River above and below a dismantled dam. The...
