I had meant to withdraw my application for Yellowstone because we decided to try the Holy Cross Wilderness this fall. We ended up getting April 4. I stuck out in the Glacier lottery.
It was. We got to the top in a reasonable amount of time. Fortunately (in hindsight), the sky didn't look great, so we didn't pause for more than a couple of minutes at the top. We rolled into camp at Upper Golden Lake shortly before dark. We were lugging wet gear that day, and I took on an...
Thanks for the info @Tweedie. I'd love to hear any other suggestions you have for loops in SW Colorado. What was the off trail route that you did in the Weminuche?
I'm leaning towards the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness for our big fall trip this year. @Bob shared a route with me that he's done, but I'm open to suggestions. We usually stay out for 10 days, but the mileage doesn't have to be backbreaking. We don't mind taking our time.
I mapped a loop out of the Pine River trailhead and goes up to the Divide either via Rincon La Osa (525) or Flint Creek Trail, then down to the Rock Creek Trail and Moon Lake via Moon Pass, and back out the Lake Fork Trail. All appears on trail, but I've seen varying reports regarding the...
Good morning all,
I'm starting the process of planning a trip for late next summer/early fall. We've done Yellowstone a couple of times, Tetons, Bob Marshall, and the Winds the last 2 years. We generally go out for 7-10 days. We're thinking about Colorado for next year, and I'm interested in...
Definitely. At home, I've eaten a meat only diet for about the last 10 months at home, which is why I went all pemmican this year. I didn't want to do anything out there that might upset my system. I only eat once or twice a day at home. It's also not like we were doing double digit miles every...
I actually only ended up eating about 2/3 of it. I had full bars that were the full thousand calories each, and half bars. I'd usually have a half bar for breakfast, then another half on the trail if I felt like it, and another half or whole at dinner (if I skipped the mid-day). I never ate more...
I'd say it's an acquired taste. I've been eating it for a few years now, and I still haven't acquired the taste. I don't season it with anything but a little bit of salt. I really can't come up with anything to explain what it tastes like. It's nothing like anything else I've ever eaten. This...
On our 10 day trip into the Winds this year I packed only pemmican for food. My food (not including my ursack) was about 6.5 pounds. That was about 22,000 calories worth of pemmican. We go heavy in other areas, though, so I'm far from the ultralight category.
We're thinking of putting a loop together out there next fall. We usually take our trip at end of August/early September, and usually for 7-10 days. Looks beautiful.
80 hikers is a lot for 5 days in September. We went in via Elkhart about 5 days prior and went over Angel Pass, up to Upper Golden Lake (stuck there in 32 hours of rain), over Hay Pass, down to Round Mountain Cutoff, into Timico Basin, and back out to Elkhart via Chain Lakes. We only saw a...
