Big Pine Lakes – John Muir Wilderness

It was over a weekend. Friday through Sunday in August. It wasn't too crowded. There were a few people camped at Second Lake, like I was, but it didn't feel like we were all on top of each other. I think the permit system helps with the crowds.

Big Pine Lakes – John Muir Wilderness

August 19-21, 2022 The trip started out on a Friday morning when I left my home in Las Vegas around 6:00 AM. The shortest route from my house to the Big Pine trailhead is through Death Valley National Park, but due to recent floods, which closed the highway trough the Park, I had to take a...

    Ansel Adams Wilderness

Thanks for the heads-up. I was in the adjacent John Muir Wilderness last August and the mosquitos were not a problem at all. Like you mentioned, a big snow season will change that for this year. I'm preparing myself for snow-covered passes, high stream crossings, etc. I'll add mosquitos to the list.

    Ansel Adams Wilderness

Thanks for the response! The information you provided gives me some good ideas for a plan B in case I cant get from Iceberg to Cecile. Thanks again for your TR!

    Ansel Adams Wilderness

Great trip report and awesome pictures! Thank you so much for sharing! I realize this was 6 years ago, but I'm wondering if I could ask you a couple questions? I understand that 2017 was a big snow year, maybe similar to this year (2022-2023). Because of the remaining snow, it sounds like you...

Not a noob but noob to the page.

I hiked the TCT last August. I arrived at the backcountry desk at 6:20 on a Thursday morning (day before my first night in the backcountry) and was 3rd in line. It seemed like the line really started growing after 7:00 AM. I got the exact itinerary I wanted, including Marion Lake on a Friday...

Sawtooth Loop: Redfish, Hell Roaring, Imogene, Edna, and Cramer Lakes

Cool trip! I had a similar itinerary planned for early July 2019, but the amount of snow remaining on the passes made us uncomfortable. We ended up doing a "Y" shaped trip from Redfish Inlet to Saddleback Lakes for the first night, then on to Cramer Lakes for the second night. I fell in love...

    Matt's offroad recovery carnival ride

Matt's adventures are always fun to watch but this one was especially good. I must be getting old though. I just kept thinking they needed to get Lizzy a helmet at maybe some gloves.

Teton Crest Trail - August 2020

This sounds like an awesome trip with cool options for the end of the trek. Sounds like you have done your homework. One piece of info I can offer is that I met a couple at Hurricane Pass who had come up from the Idaho side. The trail they used is not on my paper map, but I do see it on Caltopo...

Teton Crest Trail - August 2020

Yes, it seems many of the approaches are 8-10 miles to get to the good stuff. I think that part of the appeal of the TCT is that once you make the effort to get up there, you might as well stay a few nights.

Teton Crest Trail - August 2020

The only busy spot with backpackers was Alaska Basin and it was a Saturday evening when I was there. The permit system keeps the camp zones within the National Park much less busy. Most of the TCT is far enough away from popular trail heads that you don't get many day hikers. I believe the...

Teton Crest Trail - August 2020

I realize there is already a good deal of info on the web about the Teton Crest Trail including a few great trip reports on BCP, but in the interest of contributing, I would like to share my experience on the TCT. Maybe a bit of this info will help someone in future planning. If nothing else, a...

    Tetons Crest Trail Aug./Sept. 2020 need a new partner/partners

Sorry that I just saw this post. I just finished the TCT earlier this week. My partner had to drop out and I did it solo. FWIW you are never really alone on the TCT.

Teton Crest Trail - August 2018

I just got off the TCT earlier this week (full TR coming soon). It seemed to me that all the major camp zones (including Marion Lake, Death Canyon Shelf, South and North Fork Cascade, Upper Paintbrush, Holly Lake...) had sufficient trees for hammock camping. You may want to double check the...

    Peak Refuel

I picked up one of these Peak Refuel meals for the last day of an upcoming trip. Has anyone tried repackaging these in a ziploc? The area I will be visiting requires bear canisters and I'm hoping to save space. I normally make my own meals and cook them in a ziploc which works fine. Just...

    Pandemic? What pandemic?

A couple years back I bought hitch online and installed it by myself. Really wasn't too bad. You might consider that option. Aren't you in the Ogden area? If so, I might be able to help you out. You should probably exhaust all other options first. You probably want someone more pro than me...
