We are thinking of doing a dayhike in Capital Reef this weekend with our 11 and. 13-year-old boys. I’ve ready some very positive posts about Muley Twist in other threads. I’m curious if anyone has any additional routes we should be considering or if Muley Twist is the one.
It took us either 9 or 10 days and we used a shuttle (which I'm sure you already figured out). We did jump over to the Goldens and fished them and the Milky Lakes where we got skunked. We also spent a few days in Europe Canyon which was spectacular. We head into the cirque via Shadow lake...
I've done almost that same trip starting at Big Sandy trailhead and going out at Elk Hart. We didn't do knapsack though. I would probably suggest starting south and heading north. Finishing with Titcomb and Knapsack would be pretty amazing. On a side note, I just realized my profile picture is...
I also tend to agree with Artemis. I know some people like to cover as much mileage as possible but I really like to slow down and enjoy the Winds, especially because I'm not a big fan of hiking in the rain and with 7 days at least a few showers are inevitable. I did a big traverse of the Winds...
Here's my quick thoughts. I've had good luck fishing at lower jean, cook, spider and Halls. In fact, I had an evening at cook where our group caught nonstop fish for 2 hours or so. Even for the Winds it was spectacular. I've heard good things about middle fork and rumors that wall may have a few...
I just did the exact hike Homer recommended a few weeks ago with my 6-year-old and he loved it. It would be a great hike for her with some amazing payoffs.
No, unfortunately there isn't much shelter in Titcomb. You're above tree line. Make sure you have extra guylines and stakes in case it gets windy. You may be able to find a spot behind a large rock but I wouldn't plan on it. Besides, the winds seem to shift oftentimes between afternoon/evening...
I'll help where I can. I haven't taken the pole creek trail into Cook Lakes but that strikes me as pretty long first day with heavy packs. I'm sure you can do it but get an early start. I've found that if storms are going to hit, they generally do so in the early afternoon.
I've taken a...
+1 for upper jean being amazing. I wonder if there is anywhere in the Winds that isn't amazing though!
Westy, did you fish along the way? You past some pretty prime spots.
Nice to meet you. I actually grew up in fresno (behind Clovis west) and now live in utah. I'm trying to plan a backpacking trip back to those central CA mountains sometime. I'll hit you up for advice when I do. Which quilt did you get? For what it's worth, I didn't have a great experience with...
Coincidently, I'll be up there Sept 6-10.
Just my two cents - I've spend a fair amount of time in the Winds including 20-25 nights this year. When people talk about frequently changing weather in other ranges I chuckle to myself because I haven't seen weather change like in the Winds. The first...
The prior sleeping pad post got me thinking - I'm primarily a side sleeper sand frequently wake up with my arm, shoulder or hand numb. I currently have a Xped and a Klymit but neither does a very good job. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good mat for side sleepers?
I generally don't suffer from stage fright but I admittedly had trouble in the Enchantments when there was a mountain goat standing a few feet away waiting for me to finish so he could lick the pee salt!
