Snow is already accumulating in earnest in Utah’s High Uintas. My son and I tried to sneak in one last backpacking trip to enjoy the Fall colors and hopefully beat the snow. No such luck.
When we set out there was already some snow at the trailhead above Trial Lake.
Trails were clear of...
Today I did my first bit of rock climbing. I've climbed indoor gym walls. My brother and his daughter took me to Red Rock, an area in Draper Utah

Excellent trip report. My kids and I did a lot of camping. All but my youngest are now adults and when we get together we plan new adventures and remember the old ones too.

I think the water levels were too high and too cold. We saw a lot of fish in the creek but they were not very active and didn't want what we were offering.
I'd definitely recommend taking your kids there. I've got a granddaughter and grandson who would love it too. The hiking around the...
I just backpacked around Jones Hole with my son and we had the place to ourselves. There are two campsites at Ely Creek that can be reserved. The Creek is very clear. Same with Ely Creek.

I just tried out the MSR Trailshot. The best thing about it is that it is entirely self contained, meaning no bottles to fill with contaminated water. Everything will fit into a cargo pant pocket. Another benefit is that it is easy to clean in the field.
My only complaint is with how long it...
Last week my 19-year old son and I went backpacking in Jones Hole. We setup a base camp about a mile or so bellow the National Fish Hatchery at Ely Creek then made day-hikes from there. Here are som pictures.

Well my son and I just finished our final gear shakedown. I was able to get my pack down to a total of 55 lbs. my son's pack is much less.
Heading to Jones Hole tomorrow for five days of hiking and fishing.
Here is the stuff I pulled out after my 3rd shakedown.
All ready, now time for...
After doing some research and watching the snowpack I'm thinking the rim to rim on the Grand Canyon may be your best bet but the Colorado will probably have record levels this year.
I recommend you consider Zions National Park. Looks like the snow report says the place is now accessible. It's...
So my son voted we go to Jones Hole in the south west side of Dinosaur National Monument. This way we can fish and camp. I called the ranger and they were kind enough to reserve the campsite for us at Ely Creek. I'll post a trip report.

I always recommend bringing and knowing how to use the following gear When hiking in the mountains over snowy surfaces
- snowshoes
- avalanche beacon
- snow shovel for digging your comrades out in case they are buried in an avalanche.
- probe
Additionally I always bring a Satellite Pager. Mine...
I found an interesting article on using compactor bags here. http://sectionhiker.com/how-to-keep-your-backpacking-gear-dry-with-trash-compactor-bags/
Thanks for the tip.

That's a great point. Plus having my sleeping bag and electronics in dry bags will make me less hesitant to explore some of the slot canyons.

I watched several of Jamal Greens YouTube videos about his hikes in Escelante's Gulches. I'm super excited to do this hike with my 19 year old son one week from Monday. Normally I just hike in my Salomon boots, but after watching Jamal's videos I decided I needed a hiking sandal so I picked...
