Saw this same van last weekend at the Orderville Canyon TH. Make fun of mormon families all you want, but it's cool that this large family takes the time to really get out.
By the way, this is the second time I've seen it at a TH. Looks like they've been to a few more places since the last posting.
Awesome TR. I've been looking for something remote, but easy to do for kids. This might be it. What was the time of year you would recommend? Also, is that pool spring fed or just seasonal run-off?
I've always used a trail runner for dry hikes and I've always loved the way Adidas shoes fit my feet. I understand "to each his own" and with the understanding that everyone's foot is different, this "name brand" has been my go-to shoe for casual, sport, etc.
For simple hikes I typically just...
I believe they have a point; the hoodoo was in danger of toppling over and I guess someday by chance it could fall over and kill someone below. However I'm sure they were more than excited to be the ones to prevent that 1;1,000,000 chance. They should have reported it to the park and let them...
I agree. I think many of the issues with the Boy Scouts depends on who is leading them. The general theme of the BSA is obviously to leave a place much nicer than you found it, but I think many leaders (especially within the LDS church) are often times "called" (i.e. kind of "told") they will be...
I lost the muffler on my truck driving up Temple Wash last spring. I did not know it was closed off to vehicles because it was apparent many vehicles had done the drive. I made it about half way up that mining track and had to back down (this, in a full-sized pickup). Pucker factor was about a 7.
I was going to stop by Saturday night to say hi and get some ice, but you guys had already closed. Oh well. Hope you guys had fun with that relay going through town :-).
Just a few things from my experience this past weekend. We did this hike from the boulder air strip along the mail trail into death hollow, then down death hollow to the escalante, then did the sneak route out near Micro Death Hollow to knock a little river slogging off.
Some observations...
I picked one up before my trip last weekend to death hollow. they are great to have. Definitely something you can just set on your pad and let it do its work while you get other things prepared. Everyone in my group used it and loved it. It is literally smaller than the palm of your hand and...
Awesome. Thanks for the info Nick. I'm assuming there are many areas to find campsites in DH? What about filtering water? Any springs, or did you just pull right from the watercourse?
Yeah, it does look like we are trying to cram this into an over-nighter. We're faced with the fact that we have to get someone back to SLC airport Sunday afternoon (I think around 4-5pm) so if we did 2 nights we would have to be leaving back to our vehicles by 9-10am on Sunday morning which...
I'm prepping to do it the last weekend in June, leaving early Friday morning (like 6am) and hoping to be on the trail no later than noon from the Boulder Air strip. We will have a vehicle shuttle. Does anyone see it being possible at being able to get into Death Hollow (via the Boulder Mail...
I listen to a few podcasts and as long as they have a consistent format, the sky is the limit in my opinion. I listen to one that runs roughly 1.5 hours every day (Adam Carolla) and a couple others that only run 30 minutes (a survival podcast). I would also be consistent with the release dates...
If you want the Reef area, Deep in North Temple wash there are still some campsites un-taken (just as you get behind the reef two decent campsites on the right and left about 1/8 mile between them). No trailers can make it back that far, so you won't see them, however you will likely see a few...
You have to keep in mind that he was 18 and sounds like in-experienced even as a mountain bike rider, which means likely in-experienced in back country situations, so he sees a bit of water in the distance and thinks he can get down to it. Not too far-fetched at all for me to imagine.
What line of work are you in that requires you to carry a gun? Just curious.
I understand the extra weight thing on a gun. I don't always carry it hiking, but I'd typically do it if it's just me in an area with a high probability of an attack (more un-predictable wildlife) or when with my...
I have a bad experience with a can of bear spray in my hands and me evacuating the can, some of which made it back to me because of a gust of wind :). I thought I was going to die or lose my vision. I learned really quickly that 4 parts dish soap and 1 part water, plus dipping your face in it as...
