Agreed - this was included to convince myself there would be water if really needed. I've seen reports of potholes at Confluence Overlook, and camping there looks awesome with views to the Needles, so that could be an option instead of pushing on all the way to Water Canyon from Lou's Spring in...

Thanks for the reassurances about the Flint switchbacks, which I'll maybe give a try in the Tacoma. Back to the origin of this thread, Daniel Wesemann said he found information on 10 water sources in the Maze, including the Colorado at Spanish Bottom. So far I've only found mention of these...

Don't remember where I read that you had to pick up the permit in person, but actually looking at what they emailed and I've printed out, it is in fact the permit and dash tag. @IntrepidX is right - all you need to do is sign it. All I have to do now is decide which route in to take - Hite or...

Don't think this is an option for me, because I'll need to pick up the permit at Hans Flat ranger station. Another 4 miles or so from Happy Canyon camp ground doesn't sound nearly as bad as getting the Tacoma beached on the switchbacks.

Ah, I get it now - thanks. The NPS map does show Golden Stairs campground at the top of a trail, while google maps labels the end of NP787 with China Neck but not Golden Stairs. Presumably the Flint Trail switchbacks in good condition is needed to drive, not walk, them. I read somewhere...

I came across your trip report via google - very nice - and thought about leaving the truck up top. Not exactly sure where the Golden Stairs are though, but assume beyond the China Neck.

Got it @Bob. You guys are great. Thanks for the tip on gas for the drive in. How far will a stock 2014 Tacoma TRD Off Road get me?

Really appreciate the quick reply @Nick - and in the middle of the Super Bowl no less! Will check out the links you supplied.

I'm a noob to this great looking group. I've got a permit for a week solo in the Maze in May and this is the first thread I've stumbled on looking for beta. If your map is still available, it would be much appreciated. Cheers from the UK!
