Just sat down and had a binge read of your first 5 PCT posts. Wow, love your style of writing and use of awesome photos. Very much looking forward to reading the rest.
I am curious through, I have never thought of wearing a dress backpacking - pros/cons?
I was one of those crazy people that camped there at the top of the falls, it wasn't that close or dangerous, unless you are a sleepwalker, and gave us awesome views. And yes, it was a legal site complete with picnic table.
Thanks for the advice guys. @Dave - the Nasa map is pretty interesting. @WasatchWill - I had thought that late June would be too early (we have encountered a lot of snow in the second half of June previously in Naturalist/Amethyst areas). I will keep an eye on the map and maybe take a drive up...
Hi there, it is that time of the year where my feet are itchy to move from being bound into ski boots/bindings and move more to my hiking shoes. So, planning some summer adventures is a pastime of mine at the moment.
My questions is "what are the typical conditions for summiting Kings Peak in...
This hike has not been on my radar so very interesting to find out about it with your great photos (especially the upside down one). What time of the year did you do this?
I spent two summers in Yellowstone working and hiked over 750 miles in the area in that time, Bunsen Peak remains one of my favorite shorter hikes. A lot of bang for your buck. Yes, Yellowstone does get busy in summer but as soon as you are 1/2 mile or so off the road, very few people to be...
Great report showing that you can pack a lot into a short trip. We had a similar experience overnighting the Narrows at the end of September two years ago but camping at site 7. Thankfully we didn't have a rodent invasion that trip but have experienced this in the Grand Canyon and Coyote Gulch...
I am almost embarrassed to post this in the backpacking section as it is such a short trip. However, if like me you are seeking a quick overnight trip to get out there before the real snow comes and the fall color fades, this might be a good spot at the moment.
We got away from work a little...
Yes, it is hard to believe there is that much snow still. We did the Toxaway loop the last weekend in June two years ago and only crossed a few snow patches at and near the pass.
In a couple of weeks we (two of us) are keen to hike the Boulder Mail Trail but exiting through Death Hollow. Hopefully before it gets too hot although we plan to do the slickrock upper section early in the day.
I've got a couple of questions that I am hoping that others can help with:
- I am...
I think your itinerary is very doable and we did something similar - just split into two parts due to time off restrictions when we lived in the area. One time we camped on Death Canyon Shelf (after coming up the tram like you) and chose a site in the clump of trees in the photo below. It had...
And I hiked this same route (with the same campsites but with an extra couple of nights across at Bright Angel Campground) in April 2011 and there was snow at the rim but no more than 80 degrees down at the bottom. Very pleasant.
Fantastic trip report and even better photos. It had the bonus of bringing back memories for me as I have backpacked through there three times including staying at the same campsite in North Fork Cascade in July 2014. Here's the proof...
Your photos are fantastic and I really enjoyed your trip report especially as I was there in early October. The fall colors were just past their peak but still pretty then but oh my goodness, what a zoo of people (the photo below is when we returned at lunchtime when there were far less people...
I'm certainly not sick of your reports from this area. Having only visited by road (so not really) I have looked enviously out on the lake wishing I had a boat. Even looked into the houseboat and/or power boat hire option but haven't been able to swallow the cost as yet. Your reports might just...
We were at Katmai NP in early September and did hike up Dumpling Mountain, well most of it as the weather closed in when we were about 2/3 of the way up. Not being able to see more than 20 feet away and the rain starting to fall persuaded us to give up on trying to to summit. Despite this, we...
