Ah…I need to get back to LeConte Canyon.
I've been carrying Gu Chomps for the purpose of energy for the last few miles of the day. Been using those because they are locally available - not really particular about the brand. Quick energy when you are ready to bonk is what they are for.

I hiked the whole JMT Aug 1-20 (just so I could say I did). Loved it all except Yosemite. There were a lot of people at Rae Lakes, but not huge crowds of day hikers like Mt. Whitney & Yosemite. It was beautiful, but do yourself a favor and try to camp off the JMT - you could have a dozen people...
The Chisos Mtns in the national park are really spectacular. If you aren't busy hurrying to your water cache on the Outer Mtn Loop, there are a lot of places to sit & enjoy the scenery. I always thought the big rock patio by campsite SE3 was the best view in Texas.

Yes - you can get so much lighter easily.
No - you cannot get lighter and still take all the lux stuff you think you need.
I don't spend that much time in a tent, so I have a one-man tent that weighs 2 lbs. I do spend plenty of time asleep, so I have the lightest cushy pad available. I use a...

My XTherm came with a large stuff sack that you can supposedly use to inflate the thing, which is way more trouble than just blowing it up. I won't carry that stuff sack and use the smaller one...

As a backcountry traveler, I hate visiting National Parks. They have too many stupid rules and are magnets for idiots. It would only make sense to take over places that are already over-used to the point of potentially irrepairable damage.
My XLite is now 4 years old and, as of last weekend, has never leaked. Always blown it up with my mouth and never worried about moisture inside. Have camped on Mt. Rainier's glaciers with it. Thought it was ridiculously expensive, but it's been worth the money.
Regular down is pretty hydrophobic anyway - works o.k. for ducks & geese, right?
Since I never hear stories about people who have a clue getting into trouble because their down got wet, I've suspected that the looming wet down disaster was something made up for marketing. Now I suspect dry...
