I did reflection canyon years ago, right before it got super popular. I thought it was an awful hike and would not do it again. Yeah the views at the end were nice but that was it's only redeeming feature.
Green olive packets.
Tuna creations.
Nut rolls. A personal favorite. My dad would always bring them when I was a kid and I am carrying on the tradition.
Orchard bars. They are kind of hard to find these days, but they are my preferred "bar" option on the trail. Just fruits and nuts.
Kippard...
That would be an epic adventure you wouldn't forget, but I don't think you would have very much fun and I don't think it would be very safe. With a kid coming on the way I would honestly advise against doing it. Then again I am a fairly cautious person. I believe the San Juans in Colorado melt...
If quality of water and maximum filtration is what you are concerned about get a first needs filter. Once you have drunk water filtered with it over any of the other solutions you will agree that nothing else comes close. Unfortunately it is expensive and it is rather large and heavy, but if you...
I have been scouring the internet trying to find information on this area and there is very little available. I am planning a trip to the Winds this summer, and am planning on heading into the basins just north of Grave Lake. I found information on these basins in Nancy's book, but while looking...
I got my sister into backpacking two years ago, and she has really embraced it. While I am always way to busy to ever put a decent trip report together she has done an amazing job compiling our trips into several really nice videos.
The San Juan mountains this past July
Windriver Peak last...
There is a weather shift happening that I believe is going to shift the smoke back up north. For the last 5-6 days or so it's been coming straight west directly over Utah and the Uintas, but there is a pressure change happening next week that is going to bring more moisture in from the south, my...
I love to cook at home, I have tried to translate that to the backcountry, and failed miserably. My meals were always heavy, and cooking was the last thing I wanted to do in the backcountry. In the end I have settled on freeze dried meals for dinners. There are a handful of Mountain House meals...
Southwest Colorado was really nice last week. Unfortunately we woke up Saturday morning to some seriously bad smoke and decided to bail. If you want perfectly clear skies every day of a trip, you might need to write this year off.
I feel your pain. Through the years I have found several backpacking buddies, and we have done trips together for a while, and then, things always seem to happen and before you know it you have gone your separate ways and no longer go together.
It caused me for quite a few years to start going...
Wow. My mom grew up in Union Oregon just south of there, and I have been to Wollowa Lake before, but truly I had no idea that range was so pretty. I have driven by many times and always wanted to stop and explore, but have never made it a priority.
You mentioned it but here is another rec for Bonneville Lakes and Middle Fork. That was the area I thought of after reading through your requirements. Passing from Bonneville Basin into Middle Fork Basin does have a lot of talus, but honestly it's not THAT bad, and it's so breathtaking while...
I am wanting to do a trip into Deep Creek Lakes and summit Windriver Peak while there. This is an area in the Winds I am not familiar with, so am looking for some guidance. It looks like I can access Deep Creek Lakes from two different trail heads, either the Stillwater trail head or the Sheep...
Sleep. I always sleep poorly the first night. In fact I have a night terror about 50% of the time on my first night of a backpacking trip. They terrified me at first but now that I know to expect them they aren't too bad. I just plan on tossing and turning half the night, but the important thing...
