    Need some Winds Advice.

I agree completely!! In addition, I found this somewhat humorous, somewhat (possibly) helpful advice at: https://octanepress.com/content/how-avoid-getting-stomped-moose Enjoy your hike!!!

    Need some Winds Advice.

Thanks for all this useful info. How far would we have to hike east of Lonesome to find trees to hang the bear bags. Are there grizzlies or just black bears at Cirque and Titcomb/iSLAND? And have they learned there to chew through rope or cord tied to a tree? You will only need to get...

    Need some Winds Advice.

Either the Cirque of the Towers or Titcomb basin would be a very nice introduction to the Winds. The hike to the Cirque is easy till you get past Big Sandy Lake, then it gets more interesting for the last 3 miles to Lonesome Lake. There is no camping allowed within 1/4 mile of Lonesome Lake...

Wind River High Route July 2017

Are you aware if there are there any water sources this close to the divide in September? Would you mind elaborating a bit on the route from Hay Pass to Photo Pass? How much time to expect it to take and details on the terrain could be very useful in deciding whether this option would be viable...

    Alcohol Stove Options/Solutions

If you really need to cook instead of just rehydrating freeze dried or dehydrated then, definitely DO NOT go with an alcohol stove-you will hate it! If you are fine with simply rehydrating your meals, then alcohol is a great way to go. Personally, I am perfectly happy with the simplicity of...

Wind Rivers Traverse - Backpacking 90 miles in the Wind Rivers

It is possible to avoid the boulder field on the west side of Arrowhead Lake simply by taking the Climber's pass and staying up high against the cliffs until you are past the the boulders. There is one spot where you have to climb down about six feet but it is much easier than either dropping...

Dumbest thing taken on a backpacking trip?

Back in the days when I was a scoutmaster, our troop did an overnighter to Malan's Basin east of Ogden, Utah (about 3 miles with 2200 feet of gain and about 250 feet of loss). One of my scouts took a lawnchair, a small Dutch oven, five pounds of charcoal and 2 frozen rock Cornish game hens...

Album Your favorite shots from 2015

Looks like everybody had a great year!! Here is my two cents: Camp about 1/2 mile south of Island Lake with Fremont Peak Wind River Range in the background. Beautiful spot, nobody around.

    Wind River Backpacking Recommendations

Think about this one: From Green River Lakes go around the sw side of the lower Green River lake then up Porcupine Creek and over Porcupine pass. Down to North Fork trail then turn right up to Lozier Lakes Basin. From there you can go past Clark Lake and connect up with the Highline trail and...

    Toughest Hike or Backpacking Day

My most difficult hike was a 42 mile "Death March" that I did with a nephew last July 9. We both just wanted to see how far we could go in a day. We started at 4:10 in the morning at the Big Sandy Trail Head in the Wind River Range of Wyoming. We hiked past Big Sandy Lake then up and over the...

    Backpacking Stoves

I like to use an 8 oz bottled water bottle for fuel. They weigh less than 1/2 oz and hold enough fuel (for my needs) to last 5 or 6 days. Just be sure they are clearly labeled as FUEL so no one can accidentally drink the contents!

    Backpacking Stoves

Glad to hear you are doing tests. The Batch stove sounds great. Keep us posted on further results.

    Backpacking Stoves

I made and used a cat can (fancy feast) stove for one season. A friend made a Pepsi can stove for me and when comparing the fuel usage, I found the Pepsi stove was a little more efficient. I have recently made a pot cozy out of a small piece of cooler wrap. It weighs 1.5 oz and should help to...

Wind River Range - Baptiste and Lonesome Lakes Loops

Very nice report and photos. Congratulations on completing a great route. A couple of my friends and myself completed a similar route during the week of August 12-16 of 2013. Though we had been often to Big Sandy Lake and the surrounding area, this was our first trip up the west side of Laturio...
