Wet canyons compact cameras - recommended waterproof v non-waterproof

I love my Pentax Tough as hell and I can wash it off with a hose if I needed too. Plus it's fun to use the old vintage lenses.

Wet canyons compact cameras - recommended waterproof v non-waterproof

I really like my Pentax K-1. Its very rugged and I can take a shower with it. Since the Mark 2 is out, if you look for a used one you might get a good deal on o

    NIK software

I gave up on Photoshop and Bought Affinity Pro for $50. It's just like CS6 and Nik works just fine with it. I actually like it better than PS.

What kind of stove do you use

My favorite is my Purcell Trench packers grill. its only 3.3 ounces and does a great job of heating my water and cooking over a small fire in the mornings and night. I still carry a light canister stove just in case. Good way to use up my half used canisters on short trips. Just nice to not...

Uinta Highline Trail: Food and Bears.

Its getting hard to find a decent tree to hang food from so I just bring a bear canister. It makes a great chair, I can toss it outside and not worry about the rain or animals. Its bulky and heavier than a bag and cord but ill pack an extra pound or so for the convince. I don't even notice it...

Eric Robinson found at Allsop Lake

Not a lot of good info on crossing the passes or shortcuts in the Uintas. I can see people getting into trouble. If you take your time its so bad, but that's always the case. Had to be a bad way to go, and a tough one for his family. Good job Dan! I really think having a sat Com is well worth...

    Backpacking meals

If were doing a 3 day trip we often bring some frozen food for the first night. Burritos, steak, etc. I avoid cans as its heavy, bulky, you cant really burn them, and I hate packing bulky stuff out. Im sure there is gluten free rice and stuff you can cook once up there and add trout or some...

Gear Review Utah Rattlesnake Avoidance Training for Dogs

I did a course with Chewie two years ago with a guy out of Arizona that just retied. Took about six hours and he had four different types of rattlesnakes, and from mild to aggressive you had to walk by (no cage) with the dog. At first all the dogs would go sniff out the new smell not associating...

    New InReach

I just got back from 4 days doing the Granddaddy to four lakes basin Loop, and the Delorme did great. Sent and received texts twice a day with no issues. I really like it way more than my Spot. Battery power never dipped below 80% after four days, and if needed I could recharge with my solar...

    Need some Winds Advice.

I might be going to Cirque in Aug as well, as my backpacking buddy (Brother) cant make this trip (Wife) lol. Would be fun to meet up if it works out that way. I was thinking of Buying a Canister or Ursack, as even In the Uintas its getting hard to find good trees. My Hammock days are numbered...

    Need some Winds Advice.

Having seen so many good trip reports over the years of the Winds, and my Cousin that's visiting would like to go there instead of the Uintas, I was wondering if I could get some advise on where to go. I figured on there still being snow and the water would probably be running high, what would...

Starting a fire in damp conditions in the Uintas

I enjoy fires, if you keep them small and clean up afterwards its fine. I hardy ever use my stove anymore, few hot coals and I cook, boil and get rid most of my trash. Its the big fires for long periods that catch roots on fires, are hard to put out etc.

    4th Of July.

He was not happy being up there, Hoping now that he's not a puppy he will do better with heights. Overall Chewie is awesome, lots of stamina and does well off leash. However, I cant fish with him. Soon as I reel one close to the shore he jumps in tries to retrieve it.

    4th Of July.

Thanks Larry, I do have headnets, Permethrin for clothing, 100% Deet and going to try Picaridin as my Dog isn't a fan of Deet. I just hate mosquitos enough I don't hike in July, I'm wondering if Buck Pasture will be bad enough its worth avoiding till later in the season. I'm glad the mud might...

Starting a fire in damp conditions in the Uintas

I just look under the healthy pine trees and you can usually find clumps of dead twigs and small branches that are pretty dry. Small twigs burn fast and hot, then just toss in some finger sized branches with some sap and keep adding twigs. I carry a light folding saw to get the dead branches off...

    4th Of July.

I'm planning a trip this 4th and taking some visiting family on a 3 to 4 day trip to the Uinta's. I have hiked it tons but never this early in the season due to the bugs so I was wondering if anyone has advice on this. How bad will buck pasture be? last time I was there it was awesome but I...

    Hammocks- the thread

Whatever you decide, make sure you get a good underquilt for it. You can use a pad or use your gear to insulate the bottom, but the sides will still be cold. Underquilts are expensive but make a world of difference. You can make your own and a top quilt for much less...
